Incoherence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(When Language Corrodes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And when language corrodes<br \/>\nall our faculties falter and blur.<br \/>\nNobody knows how our tongues got so swollen and furred.<br \/>\nWhat truths are there left to be told<br \/>\nwhen we&#8217;re all lost for words?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Babel)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Words upon words<br \/>\nstack the tower of Babel<br \/>\nbrick on brick on straw on clay<br \/>\nbut a whispering stirs<br \/>\nand the structure&#8217;s unstable<br \/>\nwhen all the scaffold&#8217;s stripped away.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re ever quick to aver<br \/>\nthat we are ready and able<br \/>\nbut we can&#8217;t say what&#8217;s coming, come what may.<\/p>\n<p>By definition self-obsessed<br \/>\nwe strive to make ourselves plain<br \/>\nwith words that pass the acid test<br \/>\nwith passive thought in train.<\/p>\n<p>Words upon words,<br \/>\nfiction, folly and fable,<br \/>\neach pregnant pause a dead giveaway&#8230;<br \/>\nploughing on undeterred<br \/>\nas the sell-bys expire on our labels<br \/>\nthough at length we&#8217;ll have little or nothing to say<br \/>\nit would be too absurd<br \/>\nto spend life all agaze at our navels &#8211;<br \/>\noh, we&#8217;ve got such limited time to go on and explain.<\/p>\n<p>So, running off at the mouth,<br \/>\nwe all get carried away<br \/>\nuncertain when it all goes south<br \/>\nif we mean what we say.<\/p>\n<p>If we mean what we say&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Logodaedalus)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Logorrhea<br \/>\nindependent of the brain<br \/>\nnot a moment to reflect<br \/>\nonly time to wick up the gain<br \/>\nwhat was he thinking of and<br \/>\nwhy did he dream he could convey a bright idea?<br \/>\nWhile his tongue was wagging<br \/>\nhe forgot to use the space between his ears.<\/p>\n<p>Logodaedalus<br \/>\nwith the cunning of a fox<br \/>\npaint him devious<br \/>\nin the corner of the room,<br \/>\npop Pandora out of her box.<br \/>\nWhat is he on about and<br \/>\nwhy are his arguments so needlessly arcane<br \/>\nin their brilliance?<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s close to appearing more than slightly inane<br \/>\nwith his crooked logic<br \/>\nand his dog-eared dictionary close to hand&#8230;.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s got it<br \/>\nbut he&#8217;s insistent that we&#8217;re going to understand<br \/>\nhis complete precision;<br \/>\nin the end he&#8217;s certain that we&#8217;ll all agree<br \/>\nwith his definition&#8230;<br \/>\nan obsolescent word from 1663.<\/p>\n<p>That says it all for me.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Like perfume)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once spoken,<br \/>\nwords perfume the air<br \/>\nlike woodsmoke, like a breath of self that&#8217;s no longer there.<br \/>\nSuch confidence,<br \/>\nsuch half-baked truth&#8230;<br \/>\nthe sound of distant voices mocks the hubris of youth.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Your word)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Burnt the bridges, burnt the tread;<br \/>\nthe sodden syllables are turned.<br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t take back what you said<br \/>\nwhen you give your word.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Always and a day)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Always and a day<br \/>\nwe swore in common vow<br \/>\nthat tomorrow we would stay<br \/>\nthe same as now,<br \/>\nthe same as now.<\/p>\n<p>In every future verb<br \/>\nwe deny our own &#8222;Until&#8221;;<br \/>\nthis the promise that we serve &#8211;<br \/>\nwe have time to kill:<br \/>\nI will, I will,<br \/>\nI will, I will,<br \/>\nI will, I will<\/p>\n<p>always and a day.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Cretans always lie)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s impossible to trace<br \/>\nthese words in carbon paper trail<br \/>\nfor just as Zeno&#8217;s arrow flies the snake is eating its tail.<\/p>\n<p>And in contradictory style<br \/>\nthe soldier and the steer attend<br \/>\naround the mark of the five hundred all in charge of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;The Cretans always lie&#8221;<br \/>\nclaims the Cretan.<br \/>\nThe Cretans always lie.<\/p>\n<p>A kiss the gift from hell<br \/>\nlight, the poison pillow, dear&#8230;<br \/>\nand as we gag on it translation smacks of something like<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Cretans always lie&#8221;<br \/>\nclaims the Cretan;<br \/>\n&#8222;Of Cretan stock am I,<br \/>\nam I Cretan?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why don&#8217;t we hook this old short circuit to the value of Pi?<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Cretans always lie&#8221;<br \/>\nclaims the Cretan;<br \/>\n&#8222;Of Cretan stock am I,<br \/>\n(so) am I Cretan?&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd Zeno&#8217;s arrow flies,<br \/>\nthrough the ether.<\/p>\n<p>Come on&#8230;let&#8217;s see how the paradox flies.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(All Greek)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fried up the brain<br \/>\nwith rhetorical questions<br \/>\ndictionary games<br \/>\nand conundrums ear to ear.<br \/>\nWhen we say what we think<br \/>\ndo we think what we&#8217;re saying&#8217;s<br \/>\nmissing a link,<br \/>\ninconsistent in idea?<br \/>\n(in internal stage whispers<br \/>\nwordless the script<br \/>\ngetting lost in contradictory talk&#8230;.)<br \/>\nLosing the thread<br \/>\n(in a set of stage whispers)<br \/>\n&#8222;It&#8217;s nothing&#8221;&#8230; (he said)<br \/>\nIf I meant that it would say it all.<br \/>\n(Spoken, the lines are misshapen&#8230;.)<br \/>\nspeaking my mind<br \/>\nbut the mind that thinks out loud&#8217;s not thinking straight at all.<\/p>\n<p>All my ideas formed entirely without words<br \/>\nspeechlessly, you get the picture?<\/p>\n<p>ne, oxi, oxi, endax&#8217;<br \/>\nhai, iie, iie, redact&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>All greek to me, all in double dutch phrases,<br \/>\ncacophony of linguistic dismay,<br \/>\norotund talk and the sound of my voice is<br \/>\nfractured and forced;<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t get out what I mean to say,<br \/>\nparroted lines all misshapen&#8230;<br \/>\nspeaking my mind<br \/>\nbut the mind that thinks out loud is close to blown away.<\/p>\n<p>And when ideas come entirely without words<br \/>\ntheir purity is unalloyed<br \/>\neven to ourselves unspoken is unheard<br \/>\nand so we try to give them voice<br \/>\nbut languages have all evolved to meet the needs<br \/>\nof every individual culture<br \/>\nso with every syntax that we press them to we see<br \/>\ntheir essences adulterated&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>ne, oxi, oxi, endax&#8217;<br \/>\nhai, iie, iie, redact&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"9\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Call that a Conversation?)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, spit it out, there&#8217;s no way we&#8217;ll see eye to eye &#8211;<br \/>\nmy simple truth is your warped confusion;<br \/>\nas off different planets we spin eccentric jive.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember what I said<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t think you do either.<\/p>\n<p>Slippery of tongue though you claim my speech may be<br \/>\nall of the words you&#8217;ve been putting in my mouth just flatter to deceive.<\/p>\n<p>I never said the half of that<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re utterly mistaken<br \/>\ncall that a conversation?<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, you said it,<br \/>\nall my meaning, quite misread it&#8230;<br \/>\nthis conversation let&#8217;s forget it now.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t believe what you just said<br \/>\ncall this a conversation?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s call it quits,<br \/>\nlet&#8217;s just say it&#8217;s<br \/>\na measure of the distance between our worlds.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember what I said,<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t think you do either;<br \/>\nyou make what you will of meaning &#8211;<br \/>\ncall that a conversation?<\/p>\n<p>More likely just the space between words<br \/>\nwhen the meanings have all changed.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"10\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(The Meanings Changed)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the first word that I said to the last<br \/>\nsome strange echo remains<br \/>\nimprinted in the walls<br \/>\nrecorded in the vaults<br \/>\nwe talked and tunneled through<br \/>\nbut the meanings have all changed.<\/p>\n<p>Because of all I said<br \/>\nyou began to regard me as strange<br \/>\nuntil with some relief<br \/>\nyou suspended disbelief<br \/>\nI tried to tell the truth<br \/>\nbut my meaning was all changed.<\/p>\n<p>I saved one final word<br \/>\nto pay off this long sentence in spades<br \/>\nbut what I thought I said<br \/>\nwas patently misread.<br \/>\nThe spoken word<br \/>\nis broken here<br \/>\nand in between the two of us<br \/>\nthe meaning is all changed.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"11\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Gone ahead)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We bite off our tongues<br \/>\nwhile chewing the fat;<br \/>\nthough the fire in our lungs is celestial<br \/>\nour delivery falls flat.<br \/>\nWould a time come to be silent?<br \/>\nOh, we never spoke of that.<\/p>\n<p>We talked out of turn<br \/>\nin the school of hard knocks;<br \/>\nalthough willing to learn from experience<br \/>\nit still comes as a shock<br \/>\nwhen the time comes to be silent&#8230;<br \/>\none by one the jaws all drop.<\/p>\n<p>The voice is still clear in my head;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s the last word in monologue&#8230;.<br \/>\nclose-up, interior, night.<\/p>\n<p>mmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The voices alive in my head<br \/>\nare all tongue-tied to silence now.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the darkest of moods,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s the cruellest of jokes<br \/>\nthat this facility I used, once so fluent,<br \/>\nis cut out at a stroke.<br \/>\nAnd the time came to be silent<br \/>\nas the core connection broke&#8230;.<br \/>\nabsurd ineloquence,<br \/>\nmy own words on which I choke.<\/p>\n<p>Swallowing deep on the thread,<br \/>\nso much I&#8217;m losing now,<br \/>\nso many things left unsaid<br \/>\nand the voice I&#8217;ve been using is<br \/>\ngone ahead.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"12\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(Power of Speech)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Always we shout to be heard<br \/>\nas though our voices could express<br \/>\nthe sense of sentences deferred<br \/>\nand of lessons learned,<br \/>\nof storylines unfolding,<br \/>\nof the truths of our innocence and shame,<br \/>\nof life, the very breath that we are holding,<br \/>\nof our very names.<br \/>\nWe shoot our mouths off in adventure,<br \/>\nwe ram the ammunition in the breach,<br \/>\nblow up the flowering of sense<br \/>\nwith the power of speech.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"13\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>(If Language Explodes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if language explodes<br \/>\nin our faces like shrapnel<br \/>\nall self-defence is blown away.<\/p>\n<p>In the end this reasoning&#8217;s sound:<br \/>\nhow can we be found<br \/>\nif we&#8217;re lost for words?<\/p>\n<p>Oh, still in the search for the words&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve said my piece,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll take my leave now,<br \/>\nbreathe not a word<br \/>\nof my disarray.<\/p>\n<p>Ssh.<\/p>\n<p>All of the words have flown away&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#1\"><img decoding=\"async\"
