character&#8217;s lost his way&#8230;<br \/>\nunless I&#8217;m much mistaken I&#8217;m at the limit<br \/>\nof what I can and can&#8217;t say.<\/p>\n<p>Something untoward seems to be occurring,<br \/>\nthe best that I can do is play along<br \/>\nfor much as I deplore it the camera&#8217;s still turning&#8230;<br \/>\nyou don&#8217;t have to be bad to be in the wrong,<br \/>\nyou don&#8217;t have to be bad to get it all wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting the light,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s not much time&#8230;<br \/>\nWhat future bright is mine?<\/p>\n<p>In the course of that scene you looked right through me,<br \/>\nthough I was holding your attention as best I could.<br \/>\nI feel I&#8217;m dropping down the credits of my own movie&#8230;.<br \/>\nEven when you&#8217;re in the right you \/>\n<strong>The American Girl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She doesn&#8217;t eat, she doesn&#8217;t sleep<br \/>\nfor if she slept then she would dream about this:<br \/>\na place where she&#8217;d be treated with respect and sympathy.<br \/>\nThe American girl<br \/>\nset her sights on the old world,<br \/>\nthinking in the old world she&#8217;d find honesty.<\/p>\n<p>And so she blew in like a breath of fresh air,<br \/>\ncaptivating all around her;<br \/>\nand as she passed she left a trail of heartbreak in her wake.<br \/>\nThe American girl<br \/>\ncut her teeth on the old world,<br \/>\nall at once the old world hers upon a plate<br \/>\nand fascinated by her face<br \/>\nthe old world sealed her fate.<\/p>\n<p>She felt she&#8217;d come home across the sea,<br \/>\nthis was where she was meant to be.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#8217;t understand the potency of envy<br \/>\nso ingrained in the culture<br \/>\nand soon she found contempt had grown from her familiarity.<br \/>\nShe doesn&#8217;t eat, she doesn&#8217;t sleep,<br \/>\nshe lies awake and wonders how this happened.<br \/>\nThe American girl<br \/>\nstubbed her toe on the old world<br \/>\nand the old world&#8217;s unforgiving rigidity.<\/p>\n<p>Well times got hard<br \/>\nand talk came cheap;<br \/>\nshe found that finally<br \/>\nsomething wasn&#8217;t right across the sea&#8230;<br \/>\nnow she&#8217;s stateless in all but her memory.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Wendy and the Lost Boy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear Wendy, I still believe the promises<br \/>\nwe swore upon when we were magic.<br \/>\nThis came to me as in a dream:<br \/>\nmy heart was in your hands.<br \/>\nWendy, do you believe in promises?<br \/>\nThe problem is the boy became a man.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy &#8211; mother, child, lover &#8211; everything<br \/>\nyou meant to me lives on in memory;<br \/>\nto think of how we broke each other&#8217;s hearts<br \/>\nis more than I can stand.<br \/>\nWendy, were we in love eternally<br \/>\nor were we just in never-never land?<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the boy denies the man,<br \/>\nsometimes the boy defies the man,<br \/>\nflying in the shade of Peter Pan&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, Wendy, maybe you still remember this:<br \/>\na touch, a kiss that lasts forever&#8230;<br \/>\nbut time and tide rush in conspiracy:<br \/>\nall love is damned.<br \/>\nWendy, I still believe the promise is<br \/>\nthe boy&#8217;s alive,<br \/>\nthe boy is in the man.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Lunatic in Knots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unchain me from this lunatic<br \/>\nbefore he drags me to my knees;<br \/>\nI&#8217;d have to be some kind of Houdini<br \/>\nto unpick knots like these.<\/p>\n<p>While I was sleeping half a lifetime away<br \/>\nsomeone moved the scenery,<br \/>\nall my blocks went astray.<br \/>\nSo I awoke uneasy<br \/>\nand, as I spoke, grew queasy&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember much about last night<br \/>\nbut I suspect I went too far,<br \/>\nbecame just a passenger in my actions,<br \/>\nasleep at the wheel of the car.<\/p>\n<p>While I was sleeping someone stole in my room,<br \/>\nrearranged the pictures<br \/>\nand threw my bookmarks away.<br \/>\nThe shadow&#8217;s swiftly deepening<br \/>\nin the tidepull of the moon<br \/>\nwhile the lunatic<br \/>\ndoes his party tricks<br \/>\nbut what makes him tick<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s still most reluctant to say.<\/p>\n<p>Before the facts there&#8217;s no pat explanation&#8230;<br \/>\nonly this Other implies<br \/>\nwhatever I did was Not I.<\/p>\n<p>While I was sleeping<br \/>\noff the wake of the wake<br \/>\nI was less at home in my dreams than in my mistakes.<br \/>\nThe lunatic&#8217;s been creeping<br \/>\nsettling and setting on my face<br \/>\nand we&#8217;re bound together<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re tied and tethered<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know whether<br \/>\nthe bond is one I can break.<\/p>\n<p>After the act there&#8217;s no hidden intention,<br \/>\njust fumbling around for the plot,<br \/>\ntying myself up tighter and tighter in knots.<\/p>\n<p>So many angels,<br \/>\nhowever many can there by, ghosts and djinns<br \/>\ndancing on the head of a pin?<br \/>\nHow many questions are left unresolved?<br \/>\nExactly where do I begin<br \/>\nnow that the walls are closing in?<br \/>\nWho&#8217;s the lunatic<br \/>\nand who&#8217;s the sensible soul deep within the skin,<br \/>\nhanging on and listening in&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>Unchain me from this lunatic<br \/>\nrestrain him in his cage<br \/>\nkeep him away from me<br \/>\nkeep him away from the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Unchain me from this lunatic<br \/>\nwhose every action shouts me down;<br \/>\nkeep him away from me,<br \/>\nkeep me away from this clown.<\/p>\n<p>Unchain me from this lunatic<br \/>\nrestrain him in his cage<br \/>\nkeep him away from me<br \/>\nkeep him away from me<br \/>\nkeep me away from his rage<\/p>\n<p>While I was sleeping<br \/>\nthe lunatic stirred.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve no alibi<br \/>\nfor his beady eye.<br \/>\nOh, I talk my head off&#8230;<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s a man of few words.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Edge of the Road<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lady was in waiting<br \/>\nfor whatever story might unfold<br \/>\nanticipating that somehow base metal would turn into gold<br \/>\nyeh, she was always looking for a brighter spot,<br \/>\neager to tap into the motherlode<br \/>\nat the edge of the road.<\/p>\n<p>A world of separation,<br \/>\ntreasuring each pleasure and each pain<br \/>\ndistance is arching between them,<br \/>\na rainbow, no gold in the frame<br \/>\nuntil the boy with a smile like forget-me-nots<br \/>\nwill finally come in from the rain.<br \/>\nBut he&#8217;s out there still:<br \/>\nin the hourglass a sandstorm has stripped his sails,<br \/>\nonly wanting to fill up his pockets<br \/>\nwith the dust of all the bygone trails.<br \/>\nSomeday he&#8217;ll make his way home.<br \/>\nBut will the man of the moment finally make himself known<br \/>\nand lay down his load<br \/>\nat the edge of the road?<\/p>\n<p>The woman was in waiting<br \/>\nless in expectation than in hope;<br \/>\nmaybe he&#8217;d come to his senses in a little while<br \/>\nif she just paid out plaits of flaxen rope.<br \/>\nBut he never will,<br \/>\nin his heart there&#8217;s the murmur of an alien disease,<br \/>\nwaking up to the chill of the knowledge<br \/>\nthat his travel&#8217;s brought him to his knees.<br \/>\nNowhere is safe from all harm;<br \/>\nso will the man of her memory fall finally into her arms<br \/>\n(will the man of her memory be charmed?)<br \/>\nbefore he explodes<br \/>\nat the edge of the road?<\/p>\n<p>All is suddenly abandon,<br \/>\nall his planned accommodation failed,<br \/>\nall his actions and reactions are random,<br \/>\nhot on the scent of a stone-cold trail.<br \/>\nAnd though she burns a candle to his memory<br \/>\nall of her patience was bound to fail<br \/>\nfor he&#8217;s out there still<br \/>\nwith a thousand-mile stare falling on his face,<br \/>\nchasing after a thrill<br \/>\nthat&#8217;ll take him out beyond all sense of time and place.<br \/>\nHead on into the unknown,<br \/>\nhere&#8217;s the man chasing mystery finally missing his own.<br \/>\nBut that&#8217;s how it goes<br \/>\nat the edge of the road.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s a cutting edge to the road<br \/>\nat the end of the road,<br \/>\nat the edge of the road.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Fed to the Wolves<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And they said &#8222;They shall all be fed,<br \/>\nall the weak and powerless shall be comforted&#8230;.&#8221;.<br \/>\nThe Church&#8217;s arms are open to embrace its orphans<br \/>\nbut this unholy priest&#8217;s an earthly sod<br \/>\nwith his cock thrust casually through his vestments<br \/>\nbehind the screen of the confessional.<\/p>\n<p>Father&#8217;s fumbling in the vestry,<br \/>\nlip-service to the sermon even while his fingers fiddle;<br \/>\nblind-eyed nuns ignore the soiled habits&#8230;.<br \/>\nFor the innocents there&#8217;s no escape &#8211;<br \/>\nwhat hell on earth (in the name of Christ) was this they&#8217;d entered?<br \/>\nOh, they said &#8222;They shall be fed&#8221;<br \/>\nand meant that this young flesh<br \/>\nshould be devoured.<br \/>\nThe lambs were to be led<br \/>\nto be fed to the wolves,<br \/>\nfed to the wolves.<\/p>\n<p>(They should be safe in God&#8217;s House.<br \/>\nDoes it get any worse than this?<br \/>\nThe children are in their power<br \/>\nand power is naked.<\/p>\n<p>They should be safe in God&#8217;s House<br \/>\nbut here&#8217;s no mercy, just abuse.<br \/>\nAnd the damage that is done<br \/>\nis worse than unholy.)<\/p>\n<p>They said &#8222;They shall be fed&#8221;<br \/>\nbut they&#8217;re abused rather than comforted<br \/>\nby the very ones who pose as their protectors<br \/>\nand to complain would only bring a beating down upon their backs<br \/>\nfor their own imagined wickedness.<br \/>\nNo escape from such unholy earthly powers:<br \/>\nthe lambs shall be devoured,<br \/>\nthe lambs shall all be fed to the wolves.<br \/>\nThey shall be fed to the wolves.<\/p>\n<p>Pray for the prey,<br \/>\nfed to the wolves.<\/p>\n<p>(And the damage that is done<br \/>\nis worse than unholy.)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Enough<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To live, to be alive and to consider<br \/>\nthe plane that shapes the smooth out of the rough&#8230;<br \/>\nwhen every expectation is delivered<br \/>\nwill that be enough?<br \/>\nThis alone will have to be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Not that but this,<br \/>\nnot why but how,<br \/>\nnot if but when,<br \/>\nnot soon but now.<\/p>\n<p>To wait, to be elated and awoken&#8230;<br \/>\nwhen every love&#8217;s less tender than it&#8217;s tough<br \/>\nand all the flood defence is finally broken<br \/>\nwill this be enough?<br \/>\nThis alone will never be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Not that but this,<br \/>\nnot why but how,<br \/>\nnot if but when,<br \/>\nnot soon but now.<\/p>\n<p>Not that, not this.<br \/>\nOh, why?
