Roaring Forties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Sharply Unclear<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve never shown a trace of human frailty,<br \/>\nNo-one could ever catch you on the hop:<br \/>\nEach post-modern take on the action<br \/>\nwould find you<br \/>\nalready, in principle, totally hot,<br \/>\nall self-referential commentary<br \/>\nand a marketing man&#8217;s sense of talk shop.<\/p>\n<p>The sharper the image you cut<br \/>\nthe more you seem unreal;<br \/>\nso sharp you could cut yourself,<br \/>\ntransparently ideal.<\/p>\n<p>We all know that hard-boiled look,<br \/>\nyou cooked it up to face down the stares;<br \/>\nI feel like I&#8217;m walking on eggshells around you,<br \/>\nas though you&#8217;re already no longer quite there.<br \/>\nYou acknowledge your trauma,<br \/>\nyour neurosis is stripped and laid bare.<\/p>\n<p>The sharper the image you cut<br \/>\nthe more you disappear;<br \/>\nso sharp you could cut yourself,<br \/>\nsomehow this transparency&#8217;s unclear.<\/p>\n<p>All the mirrors in your playroom,<br \/>\nthey twist your psycho-epidermis into shape.<br \/>\nNo doubt you emerged in your make-up believing<br \/>\nquite simply, believing that you&#8217;d got it taped<br \/>\nbut the vacancy you offered<br \/>\nis already a Cheshire Cat gape.<\/p>\n<p>The sharper the image you cut<br \/>\nthe more you disappeared;<br \/>\nso sharp you could cut yourself &#8211;<br \/>\nare you still really here?<br \/>\nAnd the sharper the image you cut<br \/>\nthe more you seemed a fake,<br \/>\nso sharp you could cut yourself,<br \/>\ntransparently opaque&#8230;.<br \/>\nAnd the sharper the image you cut<br \/>\nthe less you seemed alive;<br \/>\nso sharp, but this open book&#8217;s<br \/>\ntransparently jive.<\/p>\n<p>You were so sharp you cut yourself,<br \/>\nso sharp you could cut yourself;<br \/>\nyou were so sharp you made yourself<br \/>\ntransparent<br \/>\nand transparently unclear.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Gift of Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like a wind in the wilderness<br \/>\nlike a swell on the ocean&#8230;<br \/>\nwould the spell be unbroken<br \/>\nif it was never phrased?<\/p>\n<p>She was always the precious child,<br \/>\nshe was always a strange one,<br \/>\na derangement runs deep down through her innocent gaze&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>The gift of fire and the gift of tongues,<br \/>\nthe gift to see what Goddess Fortune held in store;<br \/>\npretty soon there were whisperings of witchcraft<br \/>\nfrom the couple next door.<br \/>\nShe had the gift of talk turkey,<br \/>\nthe gift of talk turkey.<\/p>\n<p>She had no message for the marketplace,<br \/>\nshe was inflamed by each moment,<br \/>\nshe had the silver spoon of soothsay for destiny.<br \/>\nShe was always coming on with<br \/>\nthe gift of fire and the gift of tongues;<br \/>\nfamily affair, it was a fortune that they&#8217;d got &#8211;<br \/>\npretty soon they were cooking up a story<br \/>\nfor the communal pot;<br \/>\non the prime time slot<br \/>\nthey shot the gift of talk turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Oh now she can&#8217;t stop talking about the way she sees it is<br \/>\nand she can&#8217;t stop talking about her prescience.<br \/>\nShe can&#8217;t stop talking, how dangerous that is<br \/>\nand she can&#8217;t stop talking, no, she can&#8217;t stop talking&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the curse of the fire and she&#8217;s burning up before us<br \/>\nin the talk of tongues, flames that lick around the dross;<br \/>\nthe gift of fire, if she&#8217;s burning up before us<br \/>\nit&#8217;s our communal loss,<br \/>\nthe inevitable cost<br \/>\nof the gift of talk turkey.<\/p>\n<p>What a windfall of wickedness<br \/>\nwhen truth gets warped to perversion;<br \/>\nin the official version<br \/>\nthey&#8217;ll always make it quite plain<br \/>\nwhat we&#8217;re really not meant to see.<br \/>\nThe gift of fire consumes all those who touch it<br \/>\nand the gift of tongues is always double-edged;<br \/>\nthey grew aware that she would take them to the ledge,<br \/>\nso pretty soon they were working up a story<br \/>\nabout the bets they could hedge.<\/p>\n<p>The gift of fire and the gift of tongues&#8230;<br \/>\nthey take her name and they grind it in the dust;<br \/>\nall at once they&#8217;ve got alibis to cover any possible bust<br \/>\nand she&#8217;s gagged, bound and trussed<br \/>\nby the gift of talk turkey.<\/p>\n<p>But she can&#8217;t stop talking, though her audience disappears<br \/>\nand she can&#8217;t stop talking about her prescience.<br \/>\nShe can&#8217;t stop talking, though she knows that no-one hears<br \/>\nshe can&#8217;t stop talking, she can&#8217;t stop talking,<br \/>\nshe can&#8217;t stop talking &#8211; how miraculous this is!<br \/>\nShe can&#8217;t stop talking, just like Bernadette.<br \/>\nShe can&#8217;t stop talking, how dangerous that is,<br \/>\nand she can&#8217;t stop talking, she can&#8217;t stop talking,<br \/>\nno, she can&#8217;t stop talking about the way she sees it is,<br \/>\nshe can&#8217;t stop talking, just like Joan of Arc.<br \/>\nShe can&#8217;t stop talking &#8211; Continental Drift<\/p>\n<p>We make the beds in which we&#8217;ll stretch<br \/>\nin unconscious pre-planning;<br \/>\ntending and hedging our bets<br \/>\nthinking we&#8217;re thinking ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the blue comes the given life,<br \/>\nout of the window volition.<br \/>\nIn small miracles, in constant reinvention<br \/>\nwe make sense of each current position.<\/p>\n<p>Every choice that we make, every trick that we turn up<br \/>\nappears in its principle sound.<br \/>\nYeh, we&#8217;re self-made men, masters of our destiny,<br \/>\nfree and unbound&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>In to the heart comes the brave new world<br \/>\nwhere we&#8217;re slaves to the strength of conviction&#8230;..<br \/>\nI believe decisions come like continents to conquer<br \/>\nlike I believe we&#8217;re no strangers to fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Every road that we take<br \/>\nmeans a journey rejected<br \/>\nwe pretend we can still have it all;<br \/>\nevery future we dream a virtual reality,<br \/>\nonly vanity still holds us enthralled<br \/>\nwhen the best laid plans of mice and men<br \/>\nall unravel in the judgement call.<\/p>\n<p>Pride still make us ride for a fall.<\/p>\n<p>Surely we look ripe for a fall,<br \/>\nsurely we look ripe for a fall;<br \/>\nmaybe we just ride for the fall.<\/p>\n<p>iii. The Twelve<\/p>\n<p>The jury&#8217;s out upon the matter<br \/>\nand they can barely bear to admit<br \/>\nthat all the time that we spend planning<br \/>\nin the end will matter not one whit.<\/p>\n<p>Though I&#8217;ve certainly considered<br \/>\nevery vital pro and con<br \/>\nI get no scent of an acquittal<br \/>\nI lose the drift&#8230; the signs are wrong.<br \/>\nWhat&#8217;s going on?<\/p>\n<p>(Twelve signs of the zodiac,<br \/>\ntwelve hours to face,<br \/>\nthe twelve disciples all aquiver,<br \/>\ntwelve arrows strike a twelve-tone case.)<\/p>\n<p>Round and round in repetition<br \/>\nof the flight from boredom into thrill<br \/>\nand all the time we&#8217;re waiting on the punchline,<br \/>\nthe hollow laugh within &#8222;we will&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>What won&#8217;t we give to take up<br \/>\nthe turning over of a new leaf?<br \/>\nNo-one ever reaching future perfect;<br \/>\nbefore we know it, beyond belief<br \/>\nwe come to grief,<br \/>\nwe hit the reef.<\/p>\n<p>iv. Long Light<\/p>\n<p>Signs serial<br \/>\nadrift in the air<br \/>\nimmaterial<br \/>\nface up to the phosphor flare.<\/p>\n<p>Ghost essence<br \/>\nfuels fire in the rig;<br \/>\nincandescence<br \/>\nlet&#8217;s dance out the mystery jig.<\/p>\n<p>Jig,<br \/>\ndance the dance of mystery light,<br \/>\ndance the dance, jig,<br \/>\ndance the dance infernally bright.<\/p>\n<p>Dark water<br \/>\ndark fire down below&#8230;<br \/>\nstorm quarter<br \/>\ntime to dance out the mystery &#8211; no!<\/p>\n<p>The twelve will swing us to completeness<br \/>\nright from the cradle to the grave<br \/>\nand all our future projection&#8217;s<br \/>\nonly second guessing seventh waves&#8230;.<br \/>\nA break in the connections<br \/>\nwe thought were built to last<br \/>\nhere&#8217;s a change in the weather,<br \/>\nTsunami time &#8211;<br \/>\nthe wave&#8217;s already rolling in towards us from the past.<\/p>\n<p>v. Backwards Man<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only looking backwards<br \/>\nthat you retrace your hand,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s only in a moment of reversal<br \/>\nthat you can see where you stand&#8230;<br \/>\nease out, come through the film and through the mirror<br \/>\nwelcome the backwards man.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yes, the beach still stirs the ocean,<br \/>\nand soon the tide will turn the moon round<br \/>\nall is forgiven and all was foreseen &#8211;<br \/>\nall&#8217;s as it ever could be.<\/p>\n<p>Ends forced motive out of meaning<br \/>\nmeans all even out in the end;<br \/>\nretracing steps,<br \/>\nin the process you learn to stand,<br \/>\nlearn to walk again<br \/>\nso much gets forgotten, so much is forsworn<br \/>\nin retrospect.<\/p>\n<p>Did I really do that?<br \/>\nWas I ever so young?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s here, looking backwards<br \/>\nthat you confront your own face<br \/>\nit&#8217;s only in such moments of reversal<br \/>\nthat you&#8217;re secure in place.<br \/>\nThrough the fire backwards<br \/>\nagain and again<br \/>\nreturn to base.<\/p>\n<p>vi. As You Were<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s some relief<br \/>\nto find the possible in store;<br \/>\nbeyond belief,<br \/>\nin overtime, I&#8217;m overboard&#8230;<br \/>\nuncharted waters, full fathom five,<br \/>\nthe future&#8217;s rising, it&#8217;s just arrived.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the same<br \/>\nas I imagined it would be<br \/>\nbut there&#8217;s no blame<br \/>\nif every life&#8217;s imaginary.<\/p>\n<p>And if I get quite what I deserve<br \/>\nthat&#8217;ll end the sentence, the time I&#8217;ve served<br \/>\na full stop to the sentence&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>When it&#8217;s all done you willed the person you&#8217;ve become<br \/>\nin serious fun it&#8217;s as you were that you become<br \/>\nand so it&#8217;s done.<\/p>\n<p>vii.
