physical?<br \/>\nWith your finger on the pulse<br \/>\nand your head in the clouds<br \/>\neverything&#8217;s so tactile<br \/>\nIn your private world,<br \/>\nIn your little world.<\/p>\n<p>CHORUS:<br \/>\nUnder the skin you search for paradise,<br \/>\nunder the skin some kind of parasite<br \/>\nremains concealed.<br \/>\nUnder the skin a true identity, a memory<br \/>\nshe want to paint her heart out,<br \/>\nshe want to tell it as she sees it is.<br \/>\nAuthority condemns her,<br \/>\nthey say to paint&#8217;s a waste without a base,<br \/>\nsome bedrock of idea.<\/p>\n<p>Painting by numbers doesn&#8217;t add up,<br \/>\nPainting by numbers doesn&#8217;t add up,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s passionless bed-rest,<br \/>\nwork-body that&#8217;s headless,<br \/>\na head that&#8217;s without heart &#8211;<br \/>\npainting by numbers doesn&#8217;t add up to art.<\/p>\n<p>Her constant vows mean nothing,<br \/>\nnot content alone that sells &#8211;<br \/>\nThe Market Theory beckons,<br \/>\nno-one remembers what the story tells;<br \/>\nno-one remembers passion,<br \/>\nwe just recite the line<br \/>\nthat art is fine and fashion costly.<\/p>\n<p>Painting by numbers doesn&#8217;t add up;<br \/>\nsafety in numbers, put your hands up<br \/>\nin mute surrender&#8230;<br \/>\nthey&#8217;ll break her or bend her<br \/>\nfor the heart on her sleeve.<br \/>\nPainting by numbers all the modern world believes.<\/p>\n<p>And the whole thing falls apart<br \/>\nwhen the movement&#8217;s more important than the art;<br \/>\nwhen we&#8217;re more concerned<br \/>\nwith what&#8217;s been thought than said<br \/>\nthis is the moment when the culture&#8217;s dead.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that complicated,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s simple as can be:<br \/>\nshe want to paint her heart out,<br \/>\nthey want a programme for the B.B.C.<br \/>\nwhere academic critics can talk of art that&#8217;s fine<br \/>\nlike holy wine &#8211; the Blessed Intellectuals!<\/p>\n<p>Painting by numbers, safety in numbers&#8230;<br \/>\nThe poets from Venus assume that they&#8217;ve seen us &#8211;<br \/>\nthey&#8217;re quick to depart.<br \/>\nPainting by numbers doesn&#8217;t add up to art.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Shell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turn a card, turn a page,<br \/>\nthe action sure to start,<br \/>\nsecond-stage reaction<br \/>\nto illogical thoughts on random lines &#8211;<br \/>\nin a Borges dream we move toward<br \/>\nthe writing of lives.<\/p>\n<p>Leave it out, leave it in,<br \/>\nno edits &#8211;<br \/>\nwith a shout, with a grin I said<br \/>\nit was a certainty that I&#8217;d arrive<br \/>\nin an Escher sketch<br \/>\nwe walk around<br \/>\nthe drawing of lines.<\/p>\n<p>The character uncertainty<br \/>\nas he contemplates his lot<br \/>\nand tries to move with urgency<br \/>\nthough he&#8217;s rooted to the spot.<\/p>\n<p>On the brink, on the edge,<br \/>\nbut lately what I think,<br \/>\nwhat I said escapes me<br \/>\nin a flash, a tiger burning bright &#8211;<br \/>\ndoes the visionary trance obscure<br \/>\nthe burgeoning night?<\/p>\n<p>And she said &#8222;What are you doing?&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd he said &#8222;What do you think?&#8221;<br \/>\nOh, no,<br \/>\nwhat on earth are we doing?<\/p>\n<p>The characters procrastinate<br \/>\non the threshold of the door;<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s something here that fascinates,<br \/>\nthough the meaning&#8217;s still unsure<br \/>\nand the plot so thick.<br \/>\nIs it some kind of history?<br \/>\nSketch the thumbnail to the quick.<br \/>\nOh, even though it&#8217;s full of contradiction,<br \/>\nthough it&#8217;s flawed in the design<br \/>\nthis is no fiction,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s a lifeline.<\/p>\n<p>Here we are, there we went,<br \/>\nfull circle, shooting stars,<br \/>\nheaven-sent, turned turtle on the beach<br \/>\nour shells are left behind<br \/>\nlife a library, like a memory<br \/>\nof our ghost-written lives.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>All Said and Done<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the words in the world<br \/>\nwouldn&#8217;t make you stay this evening;<br \/>\nthough I scrabble around for any I can say,<br \/>\nso hard to take our leave,<br \/>\nso hard to stop believing.<\/p>\n<p>I guess we know this silence well enough,<br \/>\nand you&#8217;ll be going by and by;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m scared that anything I offer<br \/>\nmight be taken for a lie.<\/p>\n<p>CHORUS:<br \/>\nAll said and done,<br \/>\nand there&#8217;s no way to make it any different.<br \/>\nI hold my tongue as you&#8217;re walking away.<br \/>\nSo goodbye comes &#8211;<br \/>\noh, I don&#8217;t want to make it difficult<br \/>\nbut nothing&#8217;s easy<br \/>\nwhen there&#8217;s nothing left to together.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we had our opportunities&#8230;<br \/>\nmost of those chances passed us by;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m scared that anything I offer<br \/>\nmight be taken as a spirit, soul or ghost &#8211;<br \/>\nnothing so bizarre.<br \/>\nNo amount of faith disguises<br \/>\nwhat is true is what we fear the most<\/p>\n<p>Nothing can survive<br \/>\nsave the things men leave behind them.<br \/>\nAny other case would be really too absurd &#8211;<br \/>\nif thoughts remained alive<br \/>\nsurely modern science would find them?<br \/>\nNo, the soul is nothing but a word.<\/p>\n<p>All the wonders Man achieves<br \/>\nemerge from cerebral tissue.<br \/>\nChemical reactions&#8217; ebb and surge<br \/>\nform that Thing that is you&#8230;.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a sad philosophy,<br \/>\nbut better sad than wrong.<br \/>\nFace the truth instead:<br \/>\nwhen you&#8217;re dead you&#8217;re dead,<br \/>\nwhen you&#8217;re gone you&#8217;re gone&#8230;<br \/>\nnow
