A Black Box"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Golden Promises<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Besieged in the battlements of Babylon,<br \/>\nstill looking for a hat-peg you can hang your head upon &#8211;<br \/>\nnow you&#8217;ve found a place you think is Avalon:<br \/>\nyou can talk to anyone here.<br \/>\nYou can throw your arms around your nearest neighbour<br \/>\nand the smiling ones&#8217;ll tell you that you&#8217;ve saved her,<br \/>\nthat she&#8217;s saved you&#8230;.<br \/>\nThey offer the golden promises,<br \/>\nthe instantly divine;<br \/>\nyou swallow the golden promises<br \/>\nhook, sinker and line.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to throw your soul around the attitude<br \/>\nreasoning and independent thought go down the tube<br \/>\nas you go slavering after every inane platitude &#8211;<br \/>\nhow weak you find yourself here.<br \/>\nDo you really need to lose yourself completely?<br \/>\nHow come you seem to rate it all so cheaply?<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s so weak-kneed<br \/>\nto go for the golden promises,<br \/>\nmail-order holy vows;<br \/>\nyou go for the golden promises &#8211;<br \/>\nI think you really ought to know better by now.<\/p>\n<p>So I do my best and I do my nut,<br \/>\nI try to explain all these angles<br \/>\nbut you turn away.<br \/>\nOh, now you&#8217;re looking in the white of my eyes,<br \/>\nand you know what I&#8217;m going to say:<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t go for the golden promises,<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t go for the easy way&#8230;.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s right here on the doorstep:<br \/>\nfool&#8217;s gold &#8211; don&#8217;t throw your life away.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Losing Faith in Words<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just can&#8217;t see why you can&#8217;t see what I mean,<br \/>\nbut I can&#8217;t make things any plainer,<br \/>\nthe words get in the way &#8211;<br \/>\nis that quite what I mean?<br \/>\nIf not now, then certainly sooner or later<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ve got a problem with communication &#8211;<br \/>\nlook, I scrabble with my hands<br \/>\nI try to get some head-room from the elevation<br \/>\nbut you just don&#8217;t understand<\/p>\n<p>Most of the things we say mean we most of the time<br \/>\ntreat our speech with derision,<br \/>\nflap our hands in body-telegram &#8211; I know that gets through<br \/>\nso much better than anything said with precision.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve got a problem with communication<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s getting quite absurd&#8230;<br \/>\nwell, I think I&#8217;m going to flip out from the sheer frustration,<br \/>\nyes, I&#8217;m losing faith in words.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got a problem with communication,<br \/>\nonly getting through in anagrams &#8211;<br \/>\nI try to get some linkage from articulation,<br \/>\nI try to get some head-room from the elevation,<br \/>\nI try to pull back something from my education&#8230;<br \/>\nYes, I try to, try to, try to but I just don&#8217;t understand,<br \/>\nI try, I just don&#8217;t understand,<br \/>\nI talk, you just don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I don&#8217;t know why I bother,<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;m bothered.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Jargon King<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He prescribes the subject<br \/>\nhe proscribes outsiders<br \/>\nhis terms have a golden ring.<br \/>\nHe wants to find some order<br \/>\nquantifying chaos<br \/>\nin words that all the children sing.<br \/>\nHe tabulates the lexicon<br \/>\nvocabulary minimised<br \/>\nbow down to the Jargon King.<\/p>\n<p>All questions become so simple<br \/>\nif we eat the inane answer<br \/>\nif we all agree to ju-ju speak<br \/>\nwe fit into the formula<br \/>\nwe all without exception<br \/>\napprove the rule.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t understand<br \/>\nhe must be clever<br \/>\nhe must be clever<br \/>\nhe must be right<br \/>\nhe must be right<br \/>\nwe don&#8217;t understand<\/p>\n<p>Closed the ranks and barricades<br \/>\nimposed the secret language<br \/>\ncomplexity all catch-phrased<br \/>\nword-drugged any anguish<br \/>\npigeon-holed allusions<br \/>\nshut the vault behind us<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s an obvious conclusion<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ll be the chattels of His Highness.<\/p>\n<p>Bow down to the Jargon King<br \/>\nand his minion code-words.<\/p>\n<p>Here comes the reign<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Fogwalking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everything clumsy slow-motion,<br \/>\nI look for the source.<br \/>\nBuildings loom up like icebergs<br \/>\non collision course.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t want to go in there,<br \/>\nI just want to be alone,<br \/>\nunpick the stitches of time<br \/>\nin London<br \/>\nin the no-go zone.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been kicking around like a dog,<br \/>\nlost myself in the blank mass of fog,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s some kind of service.<br \/>\nAll humanity&#8217;s fall-out is there,<br \/>\nslumped in doorways<br \/>\nand mouthing cold air &#8211;<br \/>\nI have heard this.<\/p>\n<p>Fogwalking, fogwalking.<\/p>\n<p>Since the curfew<br \/>\nthe streets are half-dead,<br \/>\nall the good folk asleep in their beds,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s so easy to go off the rails<br \/>\nwhen the fog spores<br \/>\nare breeding inside by head.<\/p>\n<p>Fogwalking: there&#8217;s a presence that I sense<br \/>\nFogwalking: the neck muscles tense<br \/>\nFogwalking: it&#8217;s right here inside me,<br \/>\ntry to find a defense &#8211; oh, no.<\/p>\n<p>Fogwalking through the wreckage,<br \/>\nfogwalking through the worm-eaten<br \/>\nNight Apple,<br \/>\nfogwalking through what used to be<br \/>\nWhitechapel.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Such distance to the tips of the fingers,<br \/>\nthe ganglion loom jerks inside;<br \/>\nthe body grows steadily stranger<br \/>\nbut the spirit won&#8217;t be denied.<\/p>\n<p>That sharp halogen flash jars the eyeball,<br \/>\nthe limbs pump in overdrive;<br \/>\nthe body grows seemingly weaker<br \/>\nbut the spirit won&#8217;t be denied.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, the ash-mark stands out on the forehead<br \/>\nas the vacuum sneaks up on the eyes;<br \/>\nthe body becomes a constant traitor<br \/>\nbut the spirit won&#8217;t be denied.<\/p>\n<p>And they call that living a normal life,<br \/>\nbut normality&#8217;s not standardised.<br \/>\nThough the body gets ever more root-bound<br \/>\nthe spirit won&#8217;t be denied<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the spirit survives.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>In Slow Time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dance the dance<br \/>\ntill show time<br \/>\nthe show goes on<br \/>\nDance the dance<br \/>\nin slow time<br \/>\nif that&#8217;s what you want<\/p>\n<p>Dance the dance<br \/>\nin the back of the car<br \/>\nin the cocktail bar<br \/>\ntill show time let it ride<br \/>\nDance the dance<br \/>\nI feel I&#8217;ve been here before,<br \/>\nthis could be anywhere at all<br \/>\nin slow time.<\/p>\n<p>Danced the slow time.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Flight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Flying Blind<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I always forget how crazy things are<br \/>\nso sometimes it catches me off my guard<br \/>\nwhen they make sense.<br \/>\nThe line on the road trail the arrow in the sky,<br \/>\nI search for the mote in my brother&#8217;s eye<br \/>\nbeneath the pence&#8230;<br \/>\na time of blunt instruments.<br \/>\nStill uncertain when I&#8217;ve woken<br \/>\nor what constitutes a conscious mind,<br \/>\nthough the thought remains unspoken<br \/>\nI know I&#8217;m flying blind.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking into cold sweat on the white-hot coals<br \/>\nthe pennies from heaven drop through my soul:<br \/>\nit don&#8217;t relent.<br \/>\nAt the back end of dreams I&#8217;m amazed to awake&#8230;<br \/>\nI offer my theories but just can&#8217;t shake<br \/>\nthat seventh sense<br \/>\nto which there&#8217;s no defense.<br \/>\nIt seemed the time was for action,<br \/>\nit seemed so cool to be that kind&#8230;<br \/>\nmy tongue writhed to form some retraction<br \/>\nbut I knew I was flying blind.<\/p>\n<p>I want things to be fast, down to the power-dive;<br \/>\nI want the zero-gravity heroes to play dead,<br \/>\nbut stay alive.<br \/>\nWe want it to be slow, all the way to stall;<br \/>\nwe talk about a thousand things that never change at all.<br \/>\nNo, it never change&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It was then that I knew I&#8217;d been thoughtless,<br \/>\nsomething had slipped my mind:<br \/>\nI&#8217;d strapped myself into the Fortress<br \/>\nbut the Fortress was flying blind.<br \/>\nWe got full clearance,<br \/>\nso someone down there ought to know<br \/>\nthe truth of our disappearance &#8211;<br \/>\nIf even that still shows it accuses and blames me,<br \/>\nbut nothing was quite what it seemed.<br \/>\nSometimes things work out so strangely<br \/>\nthat it might as well all be dreamed.<\/p>\n<p><i>The White Cane Fandango<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The White Cane Fandango in Morse code,<br \/>\ntry to shake through the message,<br \/>\nshake the load;<br \/>\nonly venial sin, running on the spot<br \/>\ntill the dance begins.<\/p>\n<p>Where does a man go when the muscles cramp?<br \/>\nTry to write out a postcard on a postage stamp<br \/>\nwith a drawing pin punching out the Braille<br \/>\nfor the whole within?<\/p>\n<p>Upset the contango on your future stock;<br \/>\npaying backwardation, hold onto what you&#8217;ve got &#8211;<br \/>\nsuch a sideways grin!<br \/>\nSome day you may need<br \/>\nto trade that in.<\/p>\n<p>If we ride this right<br \/>\nthe future will fall in our hands.<br \/>\nIf we survive the flight<br \/>\nthe future will work out &#8211;<br \/>\nnothing&#8217;s that black and white.<\/p>\n<p><i>Control<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The colour-coded charts are spread,<br \/>\nbut we&#8217;re still gliding deep into the red,<br \/>\nthe radio is dead<br \/>\nevery valve blown open.<br \/>\nThe radar screen flicks monochrome,<br \/>\nair traffic controller wants to get on home,<br \/>\nwaiting for a phone call<br \/>\nto release him from responsibility.<br \/>\nNobody goes to see him any more<br \/>\nexcept for the man from the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to be, he wanted to be<br \/>\nthe man at the helm, in command of the flightpath;<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s flying a chair, quite beyond control;<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s going to have just one more chance<br \/>\nat a barrel roll.<\/p>\n<p>All in a dream, all as a dream,<br \/>\nthe colours too bright, the music too deafening &#8211;<br \/>\nthe black-out world has just begun to show.<br \/>\nThese cracked-out words I offer&#8230;<br \/>\nbut I still don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>Cool blue suffuse the colour gun &#8211;<br \/>\noh come in, come in number one:<br \/>\nyour time&#8217;s nearly run.<br \/>\nSpeed-freeze the frame,<br \/>\nthe present and the past hold fast&#8230;.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s too fast, the thing don&#8217;t,<br \/>\nthe thing won&#8217;t,<br \/>\nthe thing don&#8217;t last.<\/p>\n<p><i>Cockpit<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The rolling dice clash together, never make up the score;<br \/>\nthat old device, the ejector seat, glued to the floor.<br \/>\nEverybody waits for everyone to make a show,<br \/>\nno-one wants to be the first, admitting that they know<br \/>\nhow anythings that&#8217;s gone down here<br \/>\ncould fit into an analytic groove.<br \/>\nWait for the tactical move,<br \/>\nwait for some action we all can approve.<\/p>\n<p>Too much to drink, for the cup reaches down to the sea;<br \/>\ntoo much to think, the barometer pressuring me.<br \/>\nRolling down the weather for an Easter parade,<br \/>\nreeling out the Maydays in the hope of being saved,<br \/>\nbut the radio ham&#8217;s out giving blood &#8211;<br \/>\nno, no, he&#8217;s not listening.<br \/>\nThe cricketer knows his &#8222;Wisden&#8221;,<br \/>\nthe pilot has got his &#8222;Jane&#8217;s&#8221;,<br \/>\nbut the sum of this factual wisdom<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t help us to fly the plane<br \/>\n(no, and it never will&#8230;)<br \/>\nBeneath the tartan two-piece something rips undone&#8230;<br \/>\nWait for the ladder to run<br \/>\nwait for the snake that the ladder becomes.<\/p>\n<p>A passenger hits the cockpit, willing to chance his game:<br \/>\npulls out his gun and cocks it<br \/>\nin the hope that it all might change.<br \/>\n(Oh, but it never will&#8230;)<br \/>\nA fly-leaf from the library shows others have been here before,<br \/>\ntried, failed and kicked out the door;<br \/>\nthe aircrew don&#8217;t care anymore.<br \/>\nNow they just wait<br \/>\nfor the beat of the silk-worm wing,<br \/>\nwait for the heat to come down on us<br \/>\nfull force of the law.<\/p>\n<p><i>Silk-Worm Wings<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Full force of gravity pulls me down,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll be better off out of there;<br \/>\naerobatic spin around,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll take my chances in the open air.<\/p>\n<p>Sycamore silk-worm wings<br \/>\nor Roman Candle to the ground,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s only one thing for sure:<br \/>\nwhen the balloon goes up<br \/>\nthe aeronaut calm down.<\/p>\n<p><i>Nothing is Nothing<\/i><\/p>\n<p>He say nothing is quite what it seems,<br \/>\nhe say nothing is quite what it seems;<br \/>\nI say nothing is nothing.<\/p>\n<p><i>A Black Box<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Softly, the angels sing their time and space refrain:<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s something in everything if you can only pin down its name<br \/>\nAerobatic thoughts at the back of my mind &#8211;<br \/>\nIs it nothing but the looping line we all follow?<br \/>\nNothing but the spiral twist of DNA?<br \/>\nThere&#8217;ll be no looking back from tomorrow on today.<\/p>\n<p>So the wire is tripped, split-seconds defect to their successors;<br \/>\nthe umbilical cord is ripped &#8211;<br \/>\nhere we all are in free fall.<br \/>\nI stall where I am, as if to see where I&#8217;ve been,<br \/>\nonly running down the looping line we all follow,<br \/>\nonly chasing down the spiral twist of DNA.<br \/>\nThere can be no looking on to tomorrow from today.<\/p>\n<p>Life\/death\/night\/day&#8230;<br \/>\ncold breath will surely fly away.<br \/>\nIs the empire of sensation locked in a black box<br \/>\ndeep in me, encoded there somehow?<br \/>\nIt fires the imagination to fly on a wing and a prayer<br \/>\nthrough my life.
