pointless anyway<br \/>\nto do it just for the work and the pay.<\/p>\n<p>Look here: I don&#8217;t know, can&#8217;t you see<br \/>\nI&#8217;m so near the end, get it straight, friend &#8211;<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t ask me, don&#8217;t ask me, don&#8217;t ask me.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Porton Down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Won&#8217;t hear a sound at Porton Down,<br \/>\nthe clear liquids keep their silence,<br \/>\nburied underground at Porton Down<br \/>\nthe fast form of the final violence.<\/p>\n<p>Quite right to be worried about the proliferation<br \/>\nof nuclear bombs and power stations,<br \/>\nbut there&#8217;s a deterrent that&#8217;s going to<br \/>\nunearth us yet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Hurry on round about Porton Down,<br \/>\na quick glimpse of the future warfare<br \/>\nhidden under ground at Porton Down;<br \/>\nfar too frightening to utter what you saw there.<\/p>\n<p>They got bacteria to drop us where we stand,<br \/>\nthey got diseases still unknown to man,<br \/>\nthey got the virus and a microgram&#8217;s enough<br \/>\nto do in a continent.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate madness,<br \/>\njust one shattered test-tube to wipe out the world.<\/p>\n<p>It begins with the mustard gas,<br \/>\nit proceeds to Hiroshima.<br \/>\nThe culture moves on &#8211;<br \/>\nnow it&#8217;s bacterial, truly insane.<br \/>\nPorton Down waits to fever the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Won&#8217;t hear a sound at Porton Down,<br \/>\nthe clear liquids keep their silence<br \/>\nburied underground at Porton Down,<br \/>\nthe fast form of the final violence.<br \/>\nHurry on round about Porton Down<br \/>\na quick glimpse of the future warfare,<br \/>\nhidden underground at Porton Down,<br \/>\nfar too frightening to say what you saw there.<\/p>\n<p>No sound at Porton Down,<br \/>\nfrom Porton Down,<br \/>\nafter Porton Down.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Mirror Images<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m the mirror and you&#8217;re the image<br \/>\nthen what&#8217;s the secret between the two,<br \/>\nthese &#8222;me&#8221;s and &#8222;you&#8221;s, how many can there be?<br \/>\nOh, I don&#8217;t mind all that around the place,<br \/>\nas long as you keep it<br \/>\nwell away from me.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve begun to regret that we ever met<br \/>\nbetween the dimensions.<br \/>\nIt gets such a strain to pretend that the change<br \/>\nis anything but cheap;<br \/>\nwith your infant pique and your angst pretensions<br \/>\nsometimes you act like such a creep.<\/p>\n<p>And now I&#8217;m standing in the corner,<br \/>\nlooking at the room and the furniture<br \/>\nin cheap imitation of alienation and grief.<br \/>\nAnd now we&#8217;re going to the kitchen,<br \/>\nfix ourselves a drink and a cigarette,<br \/>\ngetting no closer to being the joker or thief.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I reflect, this nervous wreck<br \/>\nwho stands before me can see as well,<br \/>\ncan surely tell that he&#8217;s not yet free;<br \/>\nhe can turn aside, but can no more ignore me<br \/>\nthan know which one of us is he,<br \/>\nthan tell what we are going to be,<br \/>\nthan know which one of us is me.<\/p>\n<p>And now we&#8217;re going to the kitchen,<br \/>\nfix ourselves a drink and a cigarette,<br \/>\ngetting no closer to being the joker or thief.<\/p>\n<p>These mirror images,<br \/>\nthese mirror images<br \/>\nwon&#8217;t stay, go away, are no help.<\/p>\n<p>In these mirror images of myself<br \/>\nthere are no secrets.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Handicap and Equality\u00a0<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/teksty\/przeklady\/przeklady-ph-solo\/7-handicap-and-equality\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-678\" style=\"margin-top: -8px; margin-bottom: -8px;\" alt=\"Przek\u0142ad\" src=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/pl.gif\" width=\"20\" height=\"12\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All men are born equal at the moment they arrive:<br \/>\ncheck the limbs and senses we require to survive.<br \/>\nBut some come deaf and dumb and blinded,<br \/>\nsome have damage to their brains;<br \/>\nparents constantly remindedthat they&#8217;ll never play<br \/>\nthe normal children&#8217;s games.<br \/>\nThey may not be normal,<br \/>\nbut they&#8217;re people just the same.<\/p>\n<p>If Christ had been born defective<br \/>\nto fulfil the Father&#8217;s plan<br \/>\nwould he be as easily accepted<br \/>\nas God made man<br \/>\nor does the human value alter<br \/>\nin the crippled human frame?<br \/>\nThough the tongue and fingers falter<br \/>\nmust we shut them out and shut them up,<br \/>\nand shut the case and whisper &#8222;such a shame&#8221;.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s how we shut them away.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us are lucky, free from accidents at birth<br \/>\nbut their victims share our right<br \/>\nto the inheritance of earth.<br \/>\nFor all their grunts, their stumps,<br \/>\ntheir tumours, their eternal wheelchairs,<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re the freaks, we&#8217;re the inhumans,<br \/>\nif we close our eyes and turn aside, pretend<br \/>\nthat if we do they&#8217;ll not be there&#8230;.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;ve got to face it, so we&#8217;ve got to face it.<br \/>\nStill they&#8217;ve got to live with it<br \/>\nin a world we supposedly share.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Not for Keith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Germany, his days finally caught him;<br \/>\nI won&#8217;t insult his memory with long-distance grief.<br \/>\nTears and wakes weren&#8217;t his style:<br \/>\nnot him,<br \/>\nnot for Keith.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d have laughed in my face<br \/>\nif he saw it get mournful,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;d pull me up short and say &#8222;Life carries on&#8221;<br \/>\nin that gentle way of being cruelly scornful&#8230;<br \/>\nnow he&#8217;s gone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;I want to see it all, and eat it&#8221;<br \/>\nwas as close to ethos as he came;<br \/>\nthough he knew he couldn&#8217;t beat it,<br \/>\nhe never gave of himself anything less than best<br \/>\nin the game.<br \/>\nOh, one for the game&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I never did say, I never quite found time &#8211;<br \/>\nhe taught me a lot, and I carry it still.<br \/>\nNever thanked him at all for his friendship<br \/>\nand now I never will.<\/p>\n<p>The diaries we write are those that we crave for,<br \/>\nwe never put the P.S. at the foot of the final page.<br \/>\nHe deserved more time, but he never was made<br \/>\nfor middle age,<br \/>\nnot for middle age.<br \/>\nNot for Keith.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Old School Tie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh the bright young men in their tight-buttoned suits:<br \/>\nthe light beams out from capped smiles to the shines<br \/>\non their lick-spittle books.<br \/>\nOh these sharp young sparks with their fresh rosettes &#8211;<br \/>\nyeh, the artful way that they promise the earth<br \/>\nto all suffragettes.<br \/>\nWhat they won&#8217;t promise we don&#8217;t know yet.<br \/>\nThey say they&#8217;re build &#8211; and shaping society<br \/>\nbut we know they&#8217;re just saving for their own<br \/>\nsafe home in politics.<br \/>\nAnything goes: look at them run.<\/p>\n<p>Come from every side, noses Pinocchio clean;<br \/>\nlock in synchromesh, oil the wheels and the gears<br \/>\nof the party machine<br \/>\nand the final goal is a cabinet seat&#8230;<br \/>\nin the trappings of power, the presumption to speak<br \/>\nfor the man in the street.<br \/>\nOnce they move in, they&#8217;re in for good;<br \/>\nyeh, once they get that bed made<br \/>\nit&#8217;s a safe home in politics.<br \/>\nJobs for the boys: look at them run.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s just one thing none of us should forget:<br \/>\na political man is just in it for the power<br \/>\nand the smell of sucess.<br \/>\nSure, some start out as idealists &#8211;<br \/>\npretty soon they all cop for ideal careers<br \/>\nand a safe home in politics,<br \/>\na cushy job in politics;<br \/>\nlook at them run.<\/p>\n<p>The politicians fight it out on the conning tower<br \/>\nbut they all agree not to rock the boat..<br \/>\nA safe home in politics<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s built on your vote.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Time for a Change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Time for a change:<br \/>\nI felt bad, things looked strange.<br \/>\nHome, home on the range&#8230;<br \/>\nyes, it&#8217;s time for a change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Well, young man, when you grow up<br \/>\nwhat do you want to be?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8222;Please, sir, if that&#8217;s alright<br \/>\nI&#8217;d really rather like to learn how to be me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Switch on the light,<br \/>\ngetting late, almost night.<br \/>\nA shilling puts you right,<br \/>\nyou can switch off the night.<\/p>\n<p>The world was looking stretched and tight,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s an overblown balloon.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got the feeling something big<br \/>\nhas got to happen soon.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, time for a change,<br \/>\nout of reach, out of range.<br \/>\nGo and tell Doctor Strange<br \/>\nthat it&#8217;s time for a change.<\/p>\n<p>(Chris Judge Smith)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"9\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Imperial Walls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Strange to behold<br \/>\nis the stone of this wall<br \/>\nbroken by fate.<\/p>\n<p>The strongholds are bursten<br \/>\nthe work of giants decaying<br \/>\nthe roofs are fallen<br \/>\nthe towers are tottering<br \/>\nmouldering palaces roofless<br \/>\nweather-marked masonry shattering<br \/>\nShelters time-scarred<br \/>\ntempest &#8211; always knowing less.<br \/>\nSoon turkey-wrapped in the spaceman blanket<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ll offer up lame duck apologies<br \/>\nand settle down for the final banquet,<br \/>\nthe gourmet dish of technology&#8230;<br \/>\ncryogenic device catches all human life<br \/>\nunder ice.<\/p>\n<p>The current affair gets to be all our businness,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s filtered in through the T.V. screen.<br \/>\nThe norm, the average&#8230;what is this,<br \/>\nwhen it goes blank what does that all mean?<br \/>\nAnd what&#8217;s the drive of each individual?<br \/>\nAnd what&#8217;s the way that the story ends?<br \/>\nIs it Mr. X, left as the last residual<br \/>\nholder of the flame, conscience of all men?<br \/>\nBut he&#8217;s so tense to expire<br \/>\nhe throws himself on the wire<br \/>\nunder fire.<\/p>\n<p>Is this the way the world ends?<br \/>\nUnder ice, under fire?<br \/>\nHas there been some mistaken design?<br \/>\nUnder ice<br \/>\ngot to find the human voice.<br \/>\nLord, deliver us from Babel.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"11\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Faculty X<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hope by and by, hope by and by &#8211;<br \/>\nmotes in the eye, portcullis is shut&#8230;<br \/>\na skull isn&#8217;t much<br \/>\nof a castle to live in<br \/>\nwhen the change is going to come,<br \/>\nthe change has got to come.<\/p>\n<p>Explosions in the brain attest to it.<br \/>\nevolution down the drain &#8211; let all the rest do it.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, the only result<br \/>\nis cumulative drek.<br \/>\nIt won&#8217;t be the drug,<br \/>\nit won&#8217;t be the sex,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s got to be the Faculty X<\/p>\n<p>Looking for a method, I play a straight bat,<br \/>\nthrow away the chances to slip.<br \/>\nYeah, you talk about the average &#8211;<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t care about that<br \/>\nand my words are only giving me lip<\/p>\n<p>When I know that the change has got to come,<br \/>\nor what am I living for?
