The Future Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Pushing Thirty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seems the fashion&#8217;s for one-liners these days,<br \/>\nthe kind that get up everyone&#8217;s nose,<br \/>\nso much back-slapping that the vertabrae<br \/>\nare fatally exposed&#8230;.<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;m pushing thirty, pulling sixteen,<br \/>\nthough much of what&#8217;s around me is dead.<br \/>\nThey got so shirty when I tried to glean<br \/>\nthe meaning from what they&#8217;d said:<br \/>\n&#8222;If you wanna be a viable artist when you&#8217;re twenty-five<br \/>\nyou&#8217;d better be a meat-head by the time you&#8217;re twenty-one.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut now I&#8217;m pushing thirty and I&#8217;m still alive,<br \/>\nso tell me who, tell me who has won?<\/p>\n<p>See the survivors in the upcoming acts,<br \/>\nthey and the moguls make a regular killing &#8211;<br \/>\nothers take it lying on their backs,<br \/>\nyoung blood is always so willing.<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;m pushing thirty, that&#8217;s the way it is,<br \/>\ntoo late to change my mind.<br \/>\nThey play it dirty in the record biz<br \/>\nand you&#8217;ve got to toe the line.<br \/>\nIf you wanna be an A &amp; R man when the singing&#8217;s done<br \/>\nyou&#8217;d better make sure that you hedge your bets.<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;m pushing thirty and still having fun,<br \/>\nI haven&#8217;t stopped, haven&#8217;t stopped that yet!<\/p>\n<p>All the writers watch each other for the way to go,<br \/>\nfollow each other like lemmings &#8211;<br \/>\nswear they&#8217;re all waiting for Nicky Lowe<br \/>\nto turn out like David Hemmings&#8230;<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;m pushing thirty and the steady zone,<br \/>\nperhaps I should retire,<br \/>\nbut even if it all deserts me and I&#8217;m left alone<br \/>\nI still know that I&#8217;m fuelled by fire.<br \/>\nIn this rubbish world you&#8217;ve got to keep that under the lid,<br \/>\n'cos they all hope it&#8217;ll disappear&#8230;<br \/>\nbut even though I&#8217;m pushing thirty,<br \/>\nmaybe on the skids,<br \/>\nI still can be, I still can be<br \/>\nNadir!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Second Hand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See the old man acting like a fool,<br \/>\nrunning from the ambulance.<br \/>\nWhen he was a youngster he broke all the rules &#8211;<br \/>\nnow he says that was just accident.<br \/>\nAlways had the feeling he was going to die young,<br \/>\nso now he feels repentant;<br \/>\nbut the judge was progressive and the jury was hung,<br \/>\nhe got a suspended sentence.<br \/>\nSo he ran from the future, he ran from the past,<br \/>\nhe ran from the desert of the hour-glass<br \/>\nbut the sea of time is a rising flood<br \/>\nand he&#8217;s swamped by the wave.<br \/>\nHis arms go limp by his side,<br \/>\nhe only came for the ride,<br \/>\nhe thought he&#8217;d hold back the tide,<br \/>\nCanute.<\/p>\n<p>One eye on the main chance and one eye on the clock,<br \/>\noh, when did his brain go?<br \/>\nAnd when does a veteran get to be a crock&#8230;<br \/>\nno gold at the end of this rainbow!<br \/>\nHe always boxed clever with his shadowy hopes<br \/>\nbut now he&#8217;s in trouble with his back on the ropes<br \/>\nand the hands of time are bunched into fists:<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s out for the count.<br \/>\nThe sword has sunk in the lake<br \/>\nand now he&#8217;s watching dawn break<br \/>\nand now he waits for the stake,<br \/>\nDrakul.<\/p>\n<p>This boy&#8217;s a fool,<br \/>\nthis fool&#8217;s a man,<br \/>\nall men are ruled<br \/>\nby the second hand.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Trappings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He could have been so great, he could have had it all,<br \/>\nhe had it on a plate, but he threw it at the wall.<br \/>\nAnd he can&#8217;t know why, but he still said &#8222;yes&#8221;<br \/>\nto the easy lie and the poisoned vest&#8230;<br \/>\nthe trappings of success.<\/p>\n<p>They offered him the deal (Here&#8217;s the contract)<br \/>\njust like an autograph (sign on the line)<br \/>\nno need to think or feel (advances are abstract)<br \/>\nor do anything but laugh (the future defined.)<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s in possession, yes he&#8217;s possessed;<br \/>\nthey had no fear, he was so impressed<br \/>\nby the trappings of success.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see him down the clubs or at the premiere<br \/>\n(it&#8217;s just another movie, it&#8217;s just another act)<br \/>\nstumming in a pub, everywhere that&#8217;s anywhere&#8230;<br \/>\n(he&#8217;s a man of the people, just as long as the people<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t talk back)<\/p>\n<p>on the Rio shore or the Rome express<br \/>\nwith a Chinese whore or a Greek princess&#8230;<br \/>\nthese are the trappings of success.<\/p>\n<p>But he&#8217;s got no home and he&#8217;s got no friends<br \/>\nand the human mass repel him.<br \/>\nNow he&#8217;s on his own and can&#8217;t comprehend<br \/>\ndid he sell out or was he celled in?<\/p>\n<p>(He&#8217;s a prisoner in a gilded cage.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s a prisoner&#8230;he&#8217;s all the rage.)<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s waiting for his plane and his first-class seat;<br \/>\nthey&#8217;ve blown out his brains with sticky kiddies&#8217; sweets;<br \/>\nthe limo, the coke, the celebrity guest-list,<br \/>\nthe toady jokes and the gutter press&#8230;<br \/>\nthe trappings of success,<br \/>\nthese are the trappings of success.<\/p>\n<p>The trappings of success,<br \/>\nthe trap of fame;<br \/>\n(in) the trap&#8230;big game.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Mousetrap (Caught in)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After all is said and done, not very much will have been either way:<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a chronicler of action, I&#8217;m an actor in the play.<br \/>\nI know the lines I have to speak,<br \/>\nI know that I won&#8217;t ever quit, corpse, or dry,<br \/>\nbut the performance gets so pointless<br \/>\nand the days just drift on by.<br \/>\nEvery time that I go to turn the pages of the calendar<br \/>\nin the third act of this twenty-ninth year of the show<br \/>\nI&#8217;m aware of the latest leading lady and get mad at her&#8230;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s perfunctory, but why she&#8217;ll never know.<\/p>\n<p>When I began I had my hopes,<br \/>\nbelieved that I could be a leading light of the stage,<br \/>\nbut now I&#8217;ve stunned myself to silence,<br \/>\nexhausted all my inner rage,<br \/>\nextinguished all my joy and violence,<br \/>\ntrapped all my feelings in a cage.<br \/>\nEvery time that I go to turn the pages of the calendar<br \/>\nI can see that I&#8217;m not really going anywhere;<br \/>\nall these years I have skirted round experience like a scavenger.<br \/>\nCan I really feel? I wonder if I dare?<br \/>\nAt the end of the run, will there be anyone who cares?<br \/>\nAnd behind the actor&#8217;s pose, heaven knows<br \/>\nif there&#8217;s anyone left in there.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Energy Vampires<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hunched in the corner of the dressing-room,<br \/>\ntrying to get back to the real&#8230;<br \/>\nUh-oh, here they come, ready for their meal:<\/p>\n<p>Energy Vampires, crawling out of the wall,<br \/>\nthey want to steal my vitality,<br \/>\nthey want to drink it all.<\/p>\n<p>This guy says that he wrote all my songs,<br \/>\nthis girl says she&#8217;s had my baby &#8211;<br \/>\nme, I don&#8217;t know them from Adam and Eve,<br \/>\nsometimes I really believe I&#8217;m going crazy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Excuse me while I suck your blood,<br \/>\nexcuse me when I phone you,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got every one of your records, man,<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t that mean I own you?&#8221;<br \/>\nOh, sure, I long ago decided to make myself an exponent<br \/>\nof public possession in the private obsession zone.<\/p>\n<p>But now I&#8217;m serious, let&#8217;s be serious, I&#8217;m not selling you my soul,<br \/>\ntry to put it in the records but I&#8217;ve got to keep my life my own.<br \/>\nOne thing I&#8217;ve not got a lot of is time<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s slipping away&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a life to live too.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>If I could\u00a0<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/teksty\/przeklady\/przeklady-ph-solo\/8-if-i-could\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-678\" style=\"margin-top: -8px; margin-bottom: -8px;\" alt=\"Przek\u0142ad\" src=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/pl.gif\" width=\"20\" height=\"12\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You must be crazy to stay here,<br \/>\nand I&#8217;ll be crazy when you go;<br \/>\nthough there&#8217;s so much I want to tell you<br \/>\nall the words come out too slow.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been locked in my problems,<br \/>\nyou seemed prepared to wait&#8230;<br \/>\nnow that I know I&#8217;m going to lose you<br \/>\nall the words come out too late.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s no promise I can give you that you wouldn&#8217;t know was fake;<br \/>\nthough I just want to be with you, there&#8217;s no show that I can make.<br \/>\nAnd in the morning, when I wake and find you dressing<br \/>\nI can tell that it&#8217;s on your mind to go for good;<br \/>\nI know that all this time I&#8217;ve kept you guessing,<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;d tell you if I could.<\/p>\n<p>If I now said that I loved you<br \/>\nhow would that seem in your eyes?<br \/>\nOh, may my voice fall into silence<br \/>\nif my words turn out to be lies.<br \/>\nI never meant to hurt you,<br \/>\neven though that&#8217;s what I do &#8211;<br \/>\neven though you might not believe this<br \/>\nall my words were meant for you.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s no promise I can give you that you wouldn&#8217;t know was fake;<br \/>\nthough I just want to be with you, there&#8217;s no show that I can make.<br \/>\nAnd in the evening, when we sit and watch the TV<br \/>\nI know that this silence just won&#8217;t do me any good<br \/>\nand I want to beg you, beg you, beg you to believe me&#8230;<br \/>\nI&#8217;d tell you if I could,<br \/>\nI&#8217;d tell you if I could.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Future Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here we are, static in the latter half<br \/>\nof the twentieth century<br \/>\nbut it might as well be the Middle Ages,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;ll have to be some changes<br \/>\nbut how they&#8217;ll come about foxes me.<br \/>\nI want the future now,<br \/>\nI want to hold it in my hands;<br \/>\nall men equal and unbowed,<br \/>\nI want the promised land.<\/p>\n<p>but that doesn&#8217;t seem to get any closer,<br \/>\nand Moses has had his day&#8230;<br \/>\nthe tablets of law are an advertising poster,<br \/>\ncivilisation here to stay<br \/>\nand this is progress?<br \/>\nYou must be joking!<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;m looking for any kind of hope.<br \/>\nI want the future now,<br \/>\nI want to see it on the screen,<br \/>\nI want to break the bounds<br \/>\nthat make our lives so mean.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, blind, blinded, blinding hatred<br \/>\nof race, sex, religion, colour, country and creed,<br \/>\nthese scream from the pages of everything I read.<br \/>\nYou just bring me oppression and torture,<br \/>\napartheid, corruption and plague;<br \/>\nyou just bring me the rape of the planet<br \/>\nand joke world rights at the Hague.<br \/>\nOh, someday the Millennium!<br \/>\nBut how far is someday away?<br \/>\nI want the future now<br \/>\nI&#8217;m young, and it&#8217;s my right.<br \/>\nI want a reason to be proud.<br \/>\nI want to see the light.<br \/>\nI want the future now,<br \/>\nI want to see it on the screen,<br \/>\nI want to break the bounds:<br \/>\nmake life worth more than dreams.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Still in the Dark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, brighter than a thousand suns,<br \/>\nthe march towards the stars<br \/>\non the wheel, on the car,<br \/>\noff the plane, off the planet<br \/>\nand on in the search.<br \/>\nYes, we pray in the dark in the Sciences&#8217; church.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the tree of knowledge<br \/>\nthe fruit is bitter-sweet;<br \/>\nto the man in the street<br \/>\nall its myriad benefits Science confers<br \/>\nbut we&#8217;re still in the dark, much as we always were.<\/p>\n<p>Run your mind down the Sciences;<br \/>\nnone of them lay claim to show more than a part<br \/>\nbut still we shout out what we know<br \/>\nthe silence is enough to break the mortal heart.<\/p>\n<p>So bow down in adoration to the wonder that is man;<br \/>\nwe have learned all we can,<br \/>\nwe explore every frontier that straddles our way<br \/>\nbut we&#8217;re still in the dark, though we now call it day.<\/p>\n<p>No, there is no answer,<br \/>\nthere is no eternal proof,<br \/>\nthere is no timeless truth;<br \/>\nthough we learn to encompass yet more with the eye<br \/>\nwe are still in the dark when it comes to the why.<\/p>\n<p>We are still in the dark,<br \/>\nbedded down<br \/>\nand so we still lie.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"9\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Mediaevil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God lives in the cathedral,<br \/>\nor so the archbishop states,<br \/>\nall fealty to the Church,<br \/>\nall power to the state!<\/p>\n<p>Gold keys to the cathedral,<br \/>\nthey go with the bishop&#8217;s cowl;<br \/>\nhe lives a spiritual life of material wealth.<br \/>\nAre things so very different now?<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah<br \/>\noh now:<br \/>\nsave your prayers for the future.<br \/>\nSay your prayers for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, God&#8217;s gone from the cathedral,<br \/>\na different power now holds sway,<br \/>\nwe can pack them up in the history books<br \/>\nbut the Middle Ages won&#8217;t go away.<br \/>\nAnd the answer to our prayers is a Valium by the bedside,<br \/>\nnow we follow the pundits on TV,<br \/>\nnow we put our faith in Science and progress<br \/>\nand only have sex upon our knees.<\/p>\n<p>And those who are strange are still locked in asylums<br \/>\nand a sterile Pope proscribes the Pill<br \/>\nand those who are rich are still getting richer<br \/>\nand those who are poor still foot the bill.<br \/>\nAnd God lives in underground silos,<br \/>\nhanging on for Judgement day;<br \/>\nif we don&#8217;t open our eyes pretty soon<br \/>\nthen the Dark Ages&#8217;ll be here to stay.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"10\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>A Motor-bike in Afrika<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A motor-bike in Africa,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s riding the white line,<br \/>\noblivious of snakes stretched out<br \/>\nacross the way like trip-wire,<br \/>\nshouting<br \/>\n&#8222;The road is mine!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tracing the line of the skeleton coast,<br \/>\nghost riders from the Sud-West:<br \/>\nthe original angels of death they seem,<br \/>\nsix motor-bikes abreast.<\/p>\n<p>Riding through the oppressive night,<br \/>\nnow only the hardest remain.<br \/>\nLook at the scars of the tyre-tracks,<br \/>\nlook to the bodies behind their backs,<br \/>\nlook at the bastards bray<br \/>\nin Africa today.<\/p>\n<p>The bodies of Biko and Soweto poor,<br \/>\nthe Christian message of Dutch Reform,<br \/>\nthe sound of the monster, the motor-bike roar,<br \/>\nthe hate in the eyes of the uniformed Boer,<br \/>\nthe head and the bucket, the boot and the floor&#8230;<br \/>\nracial torture and racial war<br \/>\nin Africa today.<\/p>\n<p>Come in Rhodesia, South Africa, your time is up&#8230;<br \/>\nno protection on a motor-bike;<br \/>\nsooner or later the normal traffic&#8217;s gonna get you.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"11\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Cut<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everything out of order<br \/>\neverything too well produced<br \/>\nfrom the conjuror&#8217;s hat &#8211;<br \/>\nlet&#8217;s turn on the juice<br \/>\nto grind the cutting plane, the blade that gives an edge,<br \/>\nto scale the mountain; to fail upon the mountain ledge.<\/p>\n<p>Half-way up is half-way peaking<br \/>\nthe stroboscope locks the lathe;<br \/>\nI look around for a switch in phase&#8230;<br \/>\nthe disco boom stands firm, the eight-track&#8217;s in, the rage<br \/>\nlicks the present, quickly flips the future page.<\/p>\n<p>Check the deck: no marked cards,<br \/>\nno sequentialled straight or flush&#8230;<br \/>\nthe dice won&#8217;t still the blood-line rush.<br \/>\nRun the star-flood night, the cut-throat blade is stropped;<br \/>\nrace your shadow&#8230;race in case your shadow stops.<\/p>\n<p>Everything so out of order<br \/>\nno bias on the playback head;<br \/>\npapers for the border &#8211; all the tape is read,<br \/>\nthe future burns my tongue, the noise-gates all are shut,<br \/>\nbreathe the vacuum, believe there&#8217;s reason in the cut.<\/p>\n<p>Incipient white noise,<br \/>\nthe stylus barely tracks,<br \/>\nthe air controllers feed the stereo sonic smack.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"12\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Palinurus (Castaway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, I&#8217;m looking for a white note<br \/>\nto consolidate the key,<br \/>\nlike the pilot of a night boat<br \/>\nin a strange, uncharted sea: Palinurus,<br \/>\nas unsure as he can be of his direction&#8230;<br \/>\nhell, this section&#8217;s all Greek to me.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s so much I had to mention<br \/>\nbut it seems to slip my mind;<br \/>\nstill, I swear that my intentions<br \/>\nnever left my hopes behind<br \/>\nlike the captain who&#8217;s been trapped<br \/>\nin the blind eye of the whirlwind&#8230;<br \/>\nso he turns in search of the divine.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got no answers either,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got some stories on lucky days&#8230;<br \/>\nthe sea-lanes are crowded with people like us:<br \/>\nCastaways.<\/p>\n<p>From soprano through to basso<br \/>\nmy voice so strains to tell,<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;m lost in the Sargasso<br \/>\nof ideas that didn&#8217;t gel by a fraction,<br \/>\nso the action is dispelled.<br \/>\nMe, I&#8217;ve got dull reactions, protraction of doubt as well,<br \/>\nso it&#8217;s no more abide with me,<br \/>\nover the side with me&#8230;<br \/>\nwell, I know that damn well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, this hump-back of emotion,<br \/>\nit all seems to go so fast:<br \/>\none moment prince of the ocean<br \/>\nand the next upon the raft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/do-g\u00f3ry.png\" alt=\"Przewi\u0144 stron\u0119 do g\u00f3ry\" width=\"127\" height=\"51\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1372\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pushing Thirty Seems the fashion&#8217;s for one-liners these days, the kind that get up everyone&#8217;s nose, so much back-slapping that the vertabrae are fatally exposed&#8230;.
