tell you what I think about the music that&#8217;s gone down<br \/>\nto which you madly danced &#8211; frankly, you know that it stinks.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m gonna scream, gonna shout, gonna play my guitar<br \/>\nuntil your body&#8217;s rigid and you see stars.<\/p>\n<p>Look at all the jerks in their tinsel glitter suits,<br \/>\npansying around; look at all the nerks<br \/>\nin their leather platform boots, making with the heavy sound&#8230;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m gonna stamp on the stardust and scream till I&#8217;m ill &#8211;<br \/>\nif the guitar don&#8217;t get ya, the drums will.<\/p>\n<p>Now&#8217;s my big break &#8211; let me up on the stage,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll show you what it&#8217;s all about; enough of the fake,<br \/>\nbang your feet in a rage, tear down the walls and let us out!<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re more than mere morons, perpetually conned,<br \/>\nso come on everybody, smash the system with the song.<\/p>\n<p>Smash the system with the song!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Institute of mental Health, burning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was the first day of July;<br \/>\nno wind breathed in the sky<br \/>\nwhen a pin-striped suit<br \/>\nsaw that the Institute of Mental Health was burning.<\/p>\n<p>He stood upon the corner<br \/>\nwhere the sun was warmer&#8230;<br \/>\nlooking across the street,<br \/>\nhe moved the shackles on his feet<br \/>\nas the Institute was burning.<\/p>\n<p>Flames were roaring, singing like a thunderstorm;<br \/>\nsmoke was pouring straight up to the sky;<br \/>\nwindows smashing, Gothic doors and lintels fall;<br \/>\ntimbers crashing and we both know why.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody else came by to stare;<br \/>\nyou see, they didn&#8217;t really care.<br \/>\nCan&#8217;t call the fire brigade &#8211;<br \/>\nnone of them had been paid<br \/>\nand so the Institute was burning.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the city, people say it isn&#8217;t pretty,<br \/>\neveryone agrees, and everyone feels glad;<br \/>\ndoctored brains celebrate and everyone waves their chains&#8230;<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a pity they&#8217;re all mad.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Mental Health<br \/>\nspontaneously killed itself.<br \/>\nAshes to ashes<br \/>\nand dust to dust:<br \/>\nmy chains began to rust<br \/>\nas the Institute was burning, burning, burning.<\/p>\n<p>(Chris Judge Smith)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Open Your Eyes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was sitting in the dance-hall,<br \/>\nbut my mind was far away<br \/>\nso when the usherette walked over<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t know quite what to say.<br \/>\nI tried to look cool<br \/>\nbut I knew that I blew it somehow.<br \/>\nHer fishnet tights took me quite by surprise&#8230;<br \/>\nI had to open my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I told her I was dancing<br \/>\nbut she didn&#8217;t seem to hear;<br \/>\nshe asked if I wanted to learn judo,<br \/>\nthen she threw me out on my ear<br \/>\nbefore I&#8217;d even had time to take a bow.<br \/>\nI landed on the street, all dishevelled my disguise<br \/>\nbut I really opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>So if you&#8217;re leaning over the balcony<br \/>\nor hanging around the floor<br \/>\nthese are the last of the days of the Locarnos&#8211;<br \/>\nthere really are no more.<br \/>\nAnd the usherette smiles,<br \/>\nbut she&#8217;s not telling all she knows&#8230;.<br \/>\nBut there&#8217;s time in the end for us all to get wise<br \/>\nif we only open our eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Nobody&#8217;s Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look out through your dark hair,<br \/>\ntell me the colour of your eyes when they&#8217;re cool;<br \/>\nlook out through the dark ages<br \/>\nand tell me what&#8217;s covert, transfixing you.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, you&#8217;re nobody&#8217;s business,<br \/>\noh, you&#8217;re nobody&#8217;s business<br \/>\nand the patterns of your life<br \/>\nare suddenly twisted and torn<br \/>\nand gone are all the clothes that you&#8217;ve worn.<br \/>\nJust like yesterday&#8217;s papers<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re tired and forlorn<br \/>\nand you&#8217;re no-one.<\/p>\n<p>Look back at the photos you&#8217;ve saved,<br \/>\ndead mementoes of your match the light of Rome;<br \/>\nits silver children chatter in the Forum,<br \/>\nthe bath-house, and the brothels, and their homes<br \/>\nabout the latest fashions for their clothes.<br \/>\nAcross the Tyrrhenian Sea comes drifting<br \/>\na song that none of them have ever known.<\/p>\n<p>The golden dream that holds back all the hours<br \/>\nfor the ladies in their Dionysian rites,<br \/>\nblonde heads all garlanded with flowers,<br \/>\nwine and love and laughter through the night<br \/>\nin constant masque and pageant, constant flight.<br \/>\nThe ground below them whispers in a murmur<br \/>\nof passion which is hotter yet than white.<\/p>\n<p>The golden dream, the city of all cities,<br \/>\nits towers piercing into azure sky,<br \/>\nwhose hand is dealt, regardless of all pity,<br \/>\ncondemned to martyrdom, but not to die.<br \/>\nTwo lovers look up from their hidden bower.<br \/>\nThe wine has stood too long and it turns sour.<\/p>\n<p>I see the tall and bending of your streets<br \/>\nbut now they echo only leather tourist feet<br \/>\nand waking, ashen, grey-blue blinding death<br \/>\nyour sudden winding-sheet.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Shingle Song<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can see in the last light that&#8217;s graced as dawn<br \/>\nthat there&#8217;s nothing in my heart but pain<br \/>\nas I stand, facing sea, knowing that you&#8217;re gone&#8230;<br \/>\nall the elements rage to explain<br \/>\nthat I should really be on my way<br \/>\nbut there is something<br \/>\nwhich ensures I must stay.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the pain.<br \/>\nImagine just how sad I&#8217;ll be<br \/>\nin some future day when I turn<br \/>\nand no longer see your face.<br \/>\nAll I can now cry is goodbye, love, goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>In a week, in a month, in a year,<br \/>\nin a lifetime how I&#8217;ll feel none can tell.<br \/>\nAll I know is now you&#8217;re going<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s really no-one here to help.<\/p>\n<p>Believe \/>\nbecause the atmosphere in there<br \/>\nis so bad you can&#8217;t bear it.<br \/>\nAnd the people you were going to America with<br \/>\njust left on the dawn plane<br \/>\nwithout you,<br \/>\nwithout you.<\/p>\n<p>The people in the downstairs flat<br \/>\nare no longer there now because they left<br \/>\nthe gas tap on, they&#8217;re all dead.<br \/>\nSo you&#8217;ve no-one left to talk to,<br \/>\nyou just lie there in melancholy,<br \/>\nhalf-naked on your unmade bed.<br \/>\nAnd the people you were going to Africa with<br \/>\njust left on the Southern Star<br \/>\nwithout you,<br \/>\nwithout you.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the haze that&#8217;s been forming round your window-panes<br \/>\nis now protracted and poisoned<br \/>\nand you cannot feel a portion of the world outside.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine the way you&#8217;d feel<br \/>\nif all these things had happened to you<br \/>\nand the doctor says you&#8217;re dying?<br \/>\nThat is the way that I feel now<br \/>\non finding that your love belongs<br \/>\nto someone else and not I.<br \/>\nMy chance of heaven has just blown away<br \/>\nupon a passing cloud and there is nothing that I can do<br birthdays<br \/>\nand if that means turning the key<br \/>\nthen I&#8217;ll turn it with you and there&#8217;ll be no doubt<br \/>\nabout the way I agree,<br \/>\nBirthday girl&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a use.<br \/>\nWhy don&#8217;t you go away and write commercial songs;<br \/>\ncome back in three years, that shouldn&#8217;t be too long&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s a joker and an acrobat,<br \/>\na record exec. in a Mayfair flat<br \/>\nwith Altec speakers wall to wall,<br \/>\na Radford and a Revox and through it all he plays<br \/>\nstrictly nowhere Muzak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Hey, listen, baby, this band&#8217;s got a lot of soul&#8230;<br \/>\nif we can beat that out of them I see a disc of gold!<br \/>\nGive them an image, maybe glitter, maybe sex,<br \/>\nmaybe outrage, maybe elegance &#8211;<br \/>\nhow about as nervous wrecks?&#8221;<br \/>\nSigns up the product at two percent,<br \/>\njustified by vinyl shortage and the increased rent<br \/>\non the yacht he has to hire to make his pitch at Midem<br \/>\nand all the press receptions for his business friends<br \/>\nwho spill their Taittinger upon the floor<br \/>\nwhile the band sip English lager just outside the door.<\/p>\n<p>Treble, alto, bass clefs on the page,<br \/>\ncrotchets, quavers, minims all the rage<br \/>\nbut you&#8217;ll never find a pound note in the score &#8211;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s there when it&#8217;s strictly merchandise,<br \/>\nthrough all the propagated lies about what the whole thing&#8217;s for.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;ll make you a star, he&#8217;ll make you so famous<br \/>\nthat all you desire is to be left nameless,<br \/>\ndrained of all you felt you had to offer at the start.<\/p>\n<p>Not without blame, either, are the gentlemen of the press:<br \/>\nyou can talk about the state of music,<br \/>\nthey will write about your dress.<br \/>\nPlay them the new album, they will say it&#8217;s great (or not) &#8211;<br \/>\nwhen the articles come out, they&#8217;re all about<br \/>\nhow many dogs you&#8217;ve got.<br \/>\nGod to keep the human interest high,<br \/>\nand the hacks are only too willing to comply,<br \/>\npander to the ego, build up frail men as gods &#8211;<br \/>\nbut somewhere in the process, the prime purpose is forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Groupies offer their bodies, the hangers-on their coke;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s all very jolly &#8211; what a joke!<br \/>\nFellini creatures cluster round the dressing-room,<br \/>\nthe heavenly bodies all got to have their moons.<br \/>\nIn the cult of the superman the music plays a supporting role<br \/>\nand far more important is the shape of his nose,<br \/>\nthe size of his codpiece and the cut of his clothes&#8230;<br \/>\nsoul and feeling always take second place<br \/>\nto the bump and grind of a Fender bass.<br \/>\nFrankly, most musicians bore me &#8211; but not as much as those<br \/>\nwho chase the glory to bask in reflected light,<br \/>\nmaking the man much more important<br \/>\nthan his arpeggios and mordants,<br \/>\nwhen it&#8217;s the other way that&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n<p>On the values by which this world makes its heroes<br \/>\nthen the best violinist ever was Nero,<br \/>\nbecause he had the most Press<br \/>\nand his fire gimmick was simply the best.<\/p>\n<p>We got the live thing too,<br \/>\nthe Human Zoo:<br \/>\nTen thousand arms are raised, just like the Hitler Youth &#8211;<br \/>\nten thousand peace signs mark the entry of the sax.<br \/>\nTen thousand peace signs,<br \/>\nbut they&#8217;re different from the back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#1\"><img
