The Quiet Zone \/ The Pleasure Dome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Lizard Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frozen moment, cold blood time:<br \/>\nthe Iguana lady is saying goodbye&#8230;.<br \/>\nShe&#8217;s not quite ready, she wants to stay,<br \/>\nshe wants to be perfect, but not in the way.<br \/>\nHe tries to be cautious, one more cigarette,<br \/>\nhe wants to be open, but the time<br \/>\nis not yet.<\/p>\n<p>They talk about poetry, life-stories too;<br \/>\nhe wants to know if she keeps a pet or two.<br \/>\nShe&#8217;s into lizards, she&#8217;s into snakes,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s into trauma &#8211; still got the shakes<br \/>\nfrom a lady who only talked dogs and cats<br \/>\nmaking love in the alley &#8211; she thought like that&#8230;.<br \/>\nSo he doesn&#8217;t notice he&#8217;s falling in<br \/>\nto a change in colour of chameleon skin.<\/p>\n<p>And the sun beats down on the baking earth<br \/>\nin the land where the lizards play.<br \/>\nAnd the tongues flick out &#8211; though they want to touch<br \/>\nall the words get in the way.<br \/>\nAnd it&#8217;s you and me and it&#8217;s he and she<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s everything I say.<\/p>\n<p>Frozen vision,deaf and dumb:<br \/>\nstill trying to work out what I&#8217;ve become&#8230;.<br \/>\nI tried to reach you, I tried to score,<br \/>\nI shot the bolt on the open door&#8230;<br \/>\nthe secret reaction, base metal to gold,<br \/>\nand all I felt was my blood froze&#8230;<br \/>\nI walked on water &#8211; I was wearing skis &#8211;<br \/>\nand now the water must dance on me.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, for all that, will you dance with me?<br \/>\nwill you dance with me?<br \/>\nAnd the sun beats down on the baking earth<br \/>\nin the land where the lizards play.<br \/>\nAnd they shed their skins and at last begin<br \/>\nto find colours for the day.<br \/>\nWill you dance with me?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Habit of the Broken Heart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, the Sisters of Blindness<br \/>\nfrom the Convent of the Broken Heart,<br \/>\nthey want to smother it with kindness,<br \/>\nthey want to tear it all apart.<br \/>\nAnd there&#8217;s a rock of sterile virtu&#8217;<br \/>\nin the centre of the bay&#8230;.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m so sorry he hurt you,<br \/>\nbut don&#8217;t throw yourself away.<\/p>\n<p>You only wanted to have some fun,<br \/>\nyou only wanted to try it;<br \/>\nyou only wanted to be someone,<br \/>\nbut everybody denies it. Why&#8217;s it<br \/>\nso hard to make you listen?<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t go and change your name:<br \/>\nlearning to lose can be<br \/>\nthe start of winning the game.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re so special, such sadness seems a shame.<\/p>\n<p>I know that you&#8217;ve got a service to catch,<br \/>\nI wouldn&#8217;t want you to miss it,<br \/>\nbut there&#8217;s something so mismatched,<br \/>\nsome motive inexplicit&#8230;is it<br \/>\nthe call of the Convent?<\/p>\n<p>You only wanted to find someone<br \/>\nor something more than pleasure;<br \/>\npenitence for the Chosen One<br \/>\nyou can indulge at leisure &#8211;<br \/>\nby the light of the sinking sun,<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t turn your back on the treasure.<br \/>\nWhether or not you want to face it,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re a beautiful girl<br \/>\nand your lay-lady laughter<br \/>\nhas a right to be heard;<br \/>\nbut what can I give you<br \/>\nif you&#8217;ve already got the Word?<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t go<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t start<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t take on<br \/>\nthe Habit of the Broken Heart<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Siren Song<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Letters in pencil, some of them as heavy as lead,<br \/>\nas dated as carbon, as black as coal,<br \/>\nbut burning as red.<br \/>\nClues faintly stencilled: the message,<br \/>\nthough leeched, is unbled,<br \/>\nas secret as marble &#8211; as young, as old,<br \/>\nas living, as dead.<br \/>\nAnd always that laugh<br \/>\nthat comes as though it&#8217;s from pain:<br \/>\nthough I&#8217;m lashed to the mast<br \/>\nstill it hammers round my brain.<\/p>\n<p>Laughter in the backbone,<br \/>\nlaughter impossibly wise,<br \/>\nthat same laughter that comes<br \/>\nevery time I flash on that look in your eyes<br \/>\nwhich whispers of a black zone<br \/>\nwhich&#8217;ll mock all my credos as lies,<br \/>\nwhere all logic is done<br \/>\nand time will smash every theory I devise.<br \/>\nAnd the hour-glass is shattered<br \/>\nonly by the magic of your touch<br \/>\nwhere nothing really matter&#8230;.<br \/>\nNo, Nothing matters very much!<\/p>\n<p>So the siren song runs through the ages,<br \/>\nand it courses through my veins like champagne;<br \/>\nand with all the sweet kisses of addiction<br \/>\nit&#8217;s calling me to break my bonds again.<\/p>\n<p>Future memory exploding like shrapnel,<br \/>\nsome splinters escape on my tongue,<br \/>\nsome of them scar comprehension&#8230;<br \/>\nbeneath the scab they burn,<br \/>\nbut the wound becomes numbs.<br \/>\nAnd always the song draws me forward,<br \/>\nrejoicing in the search and the prayer,<br \/>\nbored with all but the mad,<br \/>\nthe strange, the freak, the impossible dare.<br \/>\nStill your laugh chills my marrow<br \/>\ntill I embrace it on my knees&#8230;.<br \/>\nOh, when the mast becomes a flagpole,<br \/>\nwhat becomes of me?<br \/>\nWhat becomes, oh, what becomes of me?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Frame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pretty keen &#8211; yes, my hobby keeps me busy;<br \/>\nand if I talk to myself, what&#8217;s the crime?<br \/>\nIn the darkroom I am a dealer in space and time&#8230;<br \/>\nwhen all memory is mellowed,<br \/>\nwhen the photograph is yellowed,<br \/>\nstill it never lies.<\/p>\n<p>There you are, your eyes laced with secret pleasure,<br \/>\nsaying that you&#8217;re on the way to change,<br \/>\ndevouring in inordinate measure<br \/>\nevery diversion that&#8217;s arranged.<br \/>\nFor every appetite, a cruel attraction,<br \/>\nbut there&#8217;s a panic in your actions;<br \/>\noh, I never saw you look so strange.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing memory chemically,<br \/>\nholding time on the stop-clock,<br \/>\nhanging back from that last frame<br \/>\njust in case it didn&#8217;t show you<br \/>\nin the way I used to know you&#8230;<br \/>\nI thought you&#8217;d always stay the same.<\/p>\n<p>The red light, the silver,<br \/>\nthe black and the bromide;<br \/>\nthe silence, the waiting for overview&#8230;.<br \/>\nThe past seems under-exposed, low tide,<br \/>\nbut still the images ghost through.<br \/>\nAnd you&#8217;re there in the bath,<br \/>\nwhich is all this has led to,<br \/>\nand I can&#8217;t say your path<br \/>\nis a right one to choose&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>But then<br \/>\nI only have a negative of you.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Wave<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The wave hits the beach,<br \/>\nwriting words on the sand &#8211;<br \/>\nto the academic man,<br \/>\nthis could be the answer&#8230;.<br \/>\nIn fact, it&#8217;s no more than a hunch;<br \/>\nstill we try to eat it&#8230;<br \/>\nI think we&#8217;re all pretty out to lunch.<\/p>\n<p>The wave is out of reach,<br \/>\ntrailing words from the hand<br \/>\nonly air can understand;<br \/>\nsemaphore on the shoreline,<br \/>\nwaiting for distance to recede,<br \/>\nunhappily imperfect<br \/>\nwhen we should be happy just to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>But with each bated breath,<br \/>\nso present, tense,<br \/>\nwe want to know, we want it sure,<br \/>\nit don&#8217;t make sense!<br \/>\nSo I&#8217;ll do mine and you do yours<br \/>\nbut let&#8217;s not trade sand and sea<br \/>\nfor brick and cement.<\/p>\n<p>The wave hits the beach,<br \/>\nlaps around abandoned clothes,<br \/>\nwants to share a joke with those<br \/>\nwho&#8217;ll brave the breakers,<br \/>\nwho&#8217;ll break bread rather than pray<br \/>\nwhile the definition-maker&#8217;s<br \/>\nlost in the small print of the day.<\/p>\n<p>The words are only pictures<br \/>\nthat the next wave wipes away.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cat&#8217;s Eye \/ Yellow Fever (Running)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was walking in the evening, I was<br \/>\nlooking for something good, clean, fine,<br \/>\npure, straight, but instead I found<br \/>\nthe bunker wall and gate.<\/p>\n<p>It was open: I was free. I gave a<br \/>\ntoken guarantee; though I later knew I<br \/>\nhad promised more, with an I.O.U.<br \/>\nI could scarcely score my way&#8230; Oh! But I herald Apocalypse anyway!<br \/>\nI was a prime believer in the faith<br \/>\nof 'I&#8217;: yellow fever in the cat&#8217;s eye.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s everything you<br \/>\nwant, own,love, hate, touch, dream,<br \/>\ntrust; and it&#8217;s everything you need.<\/p>\n<p>I got a heart like a rochet, I<br \/>\nwas out of control, I&#8217;d cleaned out<br \/>\nmy pockets for some luck to show&#8230;<br \/>\nreally looking like a hopeless case,<br \/>\nI found it in my hand, it was<br \/>\nthe Angry Ace. He wants to talk to<br \/>\nme, one on one, he wants to give<br \/>\nme his professional opinion&#8230;but<br \/>\nI&#8217;m running; I just can&#8217;t wait,<br \/>\nI haven&#8217;t got a moment to anticipate;<br \/>\nyes, I&#8217;m running, I just can&#8217;t stop,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got to get to the bottom just to<br \/>\nget to the top, I&#8217;ve got the dark<br \/>\nalleys and the open skies, I got<br \/>\nthe yellow fever from the cat&#8217;s eye.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll let you know how it goes in the ninth life.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sphinx in the Face<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I remember what it felt like at seventeen,<br \/>\nI was a cat, a snake, a lizard, a mouse;<br \/>\nstill got an interest in the limousine<br \/>\nand a spouse and a brat,<br \/>\ncountry house, London flat.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m gonna head for the island when the summer&#8217;s out,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m gonna do all the stuff that I can,<br \/>\ndrink like a fish in a waterspout &#8211;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a fan of the flow,<br \/>\nit began long ago,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a man who should know it doesn&#8217;t stop.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s so much to remember,<br \/>\nso much to forget:<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re all in the possession of the future tense,<br \/>\nbut don&#8217;t know it yet.<br \/>\nThe flesh comes through the spirit,<br \/>\nthe spirit through the flesh&#8230;<br \/>\nwe look the Sphinx in the face for answers<br \/>\nand, of course, we&#8217;re really not impressed.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re caught between age and beauty,<br \/>\nexperience and youth,<br \/>\nso we feel the need acutely<br \/>\nfor any kind of Truth.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, but we get copped some days,<br \/>\ncaught between options we&#8217;ve failed<br \/>\nto play, such wasted chance.<br \/>\nSo I join the wastrel&#8217;s dance:<br \/>\nit has slow as well as fast movement,<br \/>\nand any change must be an improvement<br \/>\non simply fossilising, standing still.<\/p>\n<p>I got a steady vocation for the Quiet Zone,<br \/>\nI just can&#8217;t wait for the song to be sung,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m still possessed by the promise<br \/>\nof the Pleasure Dome<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re so young, you&#8217;re so here,so gone,<br \/>\nso old, so near,so wrong,<br \/>\nsuch a drag so queer,so strong,so&#8230;<br \/>\nto be told.<br \/>\nSuch a drag to be told&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chemical World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Well what&#8217;s the harm?<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s good clean fun&#8230;<br \/>\nwhy don&#8217;t you just<br \/>\ngo on and have another one?<br \/>\nWhen there&#8217;s hanky-panky in the<br \/>\nboardroom, wooly-bully on the farm,<br \/>\nwhat&#8217;s the harm?<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s quite allright &#8211;<br \/>\nI mean to say,<br \/>\ntomorrow&#8217;s just another day&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, but in the morning,<br \/>\nOh, but in the morning haze<br \/>\nwill you still feel as fine,<br \/>\nwill you still need to trade day for night?<br \/>\nIn the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king;<br \/>\nin the country of the sheep, they call him Cyclops.<br \/>\nAnd the quality of mind is such a<br \/>\ntenuous thing that here you need it<br \/>\nlike a blind man needs eye drops.<\/p>\n<p>Get out of that back room,this vacuum,<br \/>\nit attracts you, but in fact<br \/>\nyou don&#8217;t know quite what it is;<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re being sapped of everything<br \/>\nyou once valued so highly&#8230;<br \/>\nWill you still feel as strong,<br \/>\nwill you still long for weakness to come?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a Chemical World<br \/>\n&#8230;Not a candidate ever fails;<br \/>\nthough you search for the Holy Grail<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re not going to find it<br \/>\nin the Chemical World.<\/p>\n<p>A sleeper train; you can&#8217;t escape;<br \/>\nfast overnight&#8230;the ticker-tape.<br \/>\nOh but in the morning,<br \/>\nbut in the morning haze<br \/>\nwill the market have turned,<br \/>\nwill there be no more days left to trade?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the Chemical World<br \/>\nand from the moment that it&#8217;s embraced<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s the Chemical World<br \/>\nall the diamonds turn to paste<br \/>\nin the Chemical World&#8230;<br \/>\nYeah, you think you&#8217;ll look so pretty &#8211;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s gonna blow up in your face.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;It&#8217;s just the time, so slow to pass.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s just the drug&#8230;it doesn&#8217;t last&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All lyrics by Peter Hammill<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/do-g\u00f3ry.png\" alt=\"Przewi\u0144 stron\u0119 do g\u00f3ry\" width=\"127\" height=\"51\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1372\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lizard Play Frozen moment, cold blood time: the Iguana lady is saying goodbye&#8230;.
