Godbluff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Undercover Man<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here at the glass &#8211; all the usual problems,<br \/>\nall the habitual farce.<br \/>\nYou ask, in uncertain voice, what you should do<br \/>\nas if there were a choice<br \/>\nbut to carry on miming the song<br \/>\nand hope that it all works out right.<br \/>\nTonight it all seems so strange &#8211;<br \/>\nmy spirit feels rigid,<br \/>\nmy body deranged;<br \/>\nstill that&#8217;s only from one point of view<br \/>\nand we can&#8217;t have illusion between me and you,<br \/>\nmy constant friend, ever close at hand &#8211;<br \/>\nyou and the undercover man.<br \/>\nI reflect: 'It&#8217;s very strange to be going<br \/>\nthrough this change<br \/>\nwith no idea of what it&#8217;s all been about<br \/>\nexcept in the context of time&#8230;&#8217;<br \/>\nOh, but I shirk it, I&#8217;ve half a mind<br \/>\nnot to work it all out.<br \/>\nIs this madness just the recurring wave<br \/>\nof total emotion,<br \/>\nor a hide for the undercover man,<br \/>\nor a litany &#8211; all the signs are there<br \/>\nof fervent devotion &#8211;<br \/>\nor the cracking of the dam?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s cracked; smashed and bursting over you,<br \/>\nthere was no reason to expect such disaster.<br \/>\nNow, panicking, you burst for air,<br \/>\ndrowning, you know you care<br \/>\nfor nothing and no-one but yourself<br \/>\nand would deny even this hand which stretches out<br \/>\ntowards you to help.<br \/>\nBut would I leave you in this moment<br \/>\nof your trial?<br \/>\nIs it my fault that I&#8217;m here to see you crying?<br \/>\nThese fantom figures all around<br \/>\nyou should have told you,<br \/>\nyou should have found out by now,<br \/>\nif you hadn&#8217;t gone and tried to do it all by yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Even now we are not lost: if you look out<br \/>\nat the night<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ll see the colours and the lights seem to say<br \/>\npeople are not far away, at least in distance,<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s only our own dumb resistance<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s making us stay.<br \/>\nWhen the madness comes, let it flood on down<br \/>\nand over me sweetly,<br \/>\nlet it drown the parts of me weak and blessed<br \/>\nand damned,<br \/>\nlet it slake my life, let it take my soul<br \/>\nand living completely,<br \/>\nlet it be who I am.<\/p>\n<p>There may not be time for us all to run<br \/>\nin tandem together &#8211;<br \/>\nthe horizon calls with its parallel lines.<br \/>\nIt may not be right for you to have and hold<br \/>\nin one way forever<br \/>\nand yet you still have time,<br \/>\nyou still have time.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scorched Earth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just one crazy moment while the dice are cast,<br \/>\nhe looks into the future and remembers<br \/>\nwhat is past,<br \/>\nwonders what he&#8217;s doing on this battlefield,<br \/>\nshrugs to his shadow, impatient,<br \/>\ntoo proud yet to kneel.<\/p>\n<p>In his wake he leaves scorched earth<br \/>\nand work in vain;<br \/>\nsmoke drifts up behind him &#8211; he is free again,<br \/>\nfree to run before the onslaught of a deadly foe,<br \/>\nleaving nothing fit for pillage,<br \/>\nhardly leaving home.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s far too late to turn, unless it&#8217;s to stone.<br \/>\nCharging madly forward, tracks across the snow,<br \/>\nwind screams madness to him, ever on he goes<br \/>\nleaving spoor to mark his passage,<br \/>\ntrace his weary climb.<br \/>\nCross the moor and make the headland &#8211;<br \/>\nstumbling, wayward, blind.<br \/>\nIn the end his footprints extend as one single line.<\/p>\n<p>This latest exponent of heresy is goaded<br \/>\ninto an attack,<br \/>\npersuaded to charge at his enemy.<br \/>\nToo late, he knows it is, too late now<br \/>\nto turn back,<br \/>\ntoo soon by far to falter.<br \/>\nThe past sits uneasily at his rear,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s walking right into the trap,<br \/>\nsurrounded, but striving through will and fear.<br \/>\nAhead of him he knows there waits an ambuscade<br \/>\nbut the dice slip through his fingers<br \/>\nand he&#8217;s living from day to day,<br \/>\ncarrying his world around upon his back,<br \/>\nleaving nothing behind but the tell-tale<br \/>\nof his track.<\/p>\n<p>He will not be hostage, he will not be slave,<br \/>\nno snare of past can trap him,<br \/>\nthough the future may.<br \/>\nStill he runs and burns behind him<br \/>\nin advanced retreat;<br \/>\nstill his life remains unfettered &#8211;<br \/>\nhe denies defeat.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s far too late to turn, unless it&#8217;s to stone.<br \/>\nLeave the past to burn &#8211; at least<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s been his own.<\/p>\n<p>Scorched earth, that&#8217;s all that&#8217;s<br \/>\nleft when he&#8217;s done;<br \/>\nholding nothing but beholden to no-one,<br \/>\nclaiming nothing, out of no false pride,<br \/>\nhe survives.<br \/>\nSnow tracks are all that&#8217;s left to be seen<br \/>\nof a man who entered the course of a dream,<br \/>\nclaiming nothing but the life he&#8217;s known<br \/>\n&#8211; this, at least, has been his own.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arrow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stub towers in the distance, riders the blasted moor<br \/>\nagainst the horizon<br \/>\nFickle promises of treaty, fatal harbingers of war,<br \/>\nfutile horisons<br \/>\nswirl as one in this flight, this mad chase,<br \/>\nthis surge across the marshy mud landscape<br \/>\nuntil the meaning is forgotten.<br \/>\nHood masks the eager face, skin stretched<br \/>\nand sallow,<br \/>\nheadlong into the chilling night, as swift<br \/>\nas any arrow.<\/p>\n<p>Feet against the flagstones, fingers scrabbling<br \/>\nat the lock,<br \/>\ncraving protection.<br \/>\n'Sanctuary!&#8217; croaks a voice,<br \/>\nhalf-strangled by the shock<br \/>\nof its rejection.<br \/>\nShot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key;<br \/>\nnow the echoes of all frightfull memory<br \/>\nintrude in the silence.<br \/>\nWhat a crawl against the slope &#8211;<br \/>\ndark loom the gallows<br \/>\nOne touch to the chapel door,<br \/>\nhow swiftly comes the arrow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Compassion&#8221; you plead, as though<br \/>\nthey kept it in a box<br \/>\n&#8211; that&#8217;s long since been empty.<br \/>\nI&#8217;d like to help you somehow,<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;m in the self-same spot:<br \/>\nmy condition exempts me.<br \/>\nWe are all on the run on our knees;<br \/>\nthe sundial draws a line upon eternity<br \/>\nacross every number.<br \/>\nHow long the time seems, how dark the shadow,<br \/>\nhow straight the eagle flies,<br \/>\nhow straight towards his arrow.<br \/>\nHow long the night is &#8211;<br \/>\nwhy is this passage so narrow?<br \/>\nHow strange my body feels,<br \/>\nimpaled upon the arrow.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sleepwalkers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At night, this mindless army,<br \/>\nranks unbroken by dissent,<br \/>\nis moved into action<br \/>\nand their pace does not relent.<br \/>\nIn step, with great precision,<br \/>\nthese dancers of the night<br \/>\nadvance against the darkness &#8211;<br \/>\nhow implacable their might!<br \/>\nEyes undulled by moon,<br \/>\ntheir arms and legs akimbo,<br \/>\nthey walk and live,<br \/>\nhoping soon to surface from this limbo.<br \/>\nTheir minds, anticipating the dawn of the day,<br \/>\nshall never know what&#8217;s waiting mere insight away<br \/>\n&#8211; too far, too soon.<\/p>\n<p>Senses dimmed in semi-sentience,<br \/>\nonly wheeling<br \/>\nthrough this plane,<br \/>\nonly seeing fragmented images prematurely<br \/>\ncurtailed by the brain,<br \/>\nbut breathing, living,<br \/>\nknowing in some measure at least<br \/>\nthe soul which roots the matter<br \/>\nof both Beauty and the Beast.<br \/>\nFrom what tooth or claw does murder spring,<br \/>\nfrom what flesh and blood does passion?<br \/>\nBoth cut through the air with the pendulum&#8217;s swing<br \/>\nin deadly but delicate fashion.<br \/>\nAnd every range of feeling is there in the dream<br \/>\nand every logic&#8217;s reeling in the force of the scream<br \/>\nthe senses sting.<br \/>\nAnd though I may be dreaming and reality stalls<br \/>\nI only know the meaning of sight and that&#8217;s all<br \/>\nand that&#8217;s nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The columns of the night advance,<br \/>\ninfectiously, their cryptic dance<br \/>\ngathers converts to the fold &#8211;<br \/>\nin time the whole raw world will pace<br \/>\nthese same steps<br \/>\non into the same bitter end.<\/p>\n<p>Somnolent muster now the dancing dead<br \/>\nforsake the shelter of their secure beds,<br \/>\nawaken to a slumber whose depths they dread,<br \/>\nas if the ground they tread would give way<br \/>\nbeneath the solemn weight of their conception.<br \/>\nI&#8217;d search the hidden corners of all this world,<br \/>\nmake reason of the sensory whorl<br \/>\nif I only had time,<br \/>\nbut soon the dream is ended.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, before you lay down<br \/>\nto the sweetness of your sleep<br \/>\ndo you question your surrender<br \/>\nto the drop from Lover&#8217;s Leap<br \/>\nor does the anaesthetic darkness<br \/>\ntake hold on its very own?<br \/>\nDoes your body rise in service<br \/>\nwith not one dissenting groan?<br \/>\nThese waking dreams of life and death<br \/>\nin the mirror are twisted and buckled,<br \/>\nlashes flicker, a catch of breath,<br \/>\nskin whitening at the knuckles.<br \/>\nThe army of sleepwalkers shake their limbs<br \/>\nand are loose<br \/>\nand though I am a talker, I can phrase no excuse<br \/>\nnot to rise again.<br \/>\nIn the chorus of the night-time I belong<br \/>\nand I, like you, must dance to that moonlight song<br \/>\nand in the end I too must pay the cost<br \/>\nof this life.<br \/>\nIf all is lost none is known<br \/>\nand how could we lose what we&#8217;ve never owned?<br \/>\nOh, I&#8217;d search out every knowledge<br \/>\nthat I could find,<br \/>\nunravel all the mysteries of mind,<br \/>\nif I only had time,<br \/>\nif I only had time,<br \/>\nbut soon my time is ended.<\/p>\n<p>All lyrics by Peter Hammill<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/vdgg.art.pl\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/do-g\u00f3ry.png\" alt=\"Przewi\u0144 stron\u0119 do g\u00f3ry\" width=\"127\" height=\"51\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1372\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Undercover Man Here at the glass &#8211;
